To me, Loveliescrushing are the band as far as straight-up shoegaze goes... their albums contain the very essence of what makes shoegaze good to me. It's so pure and ... fuzzy.
Astrobrite are pretty good, they've got some really cool/weird stuff ("Whitenoisesuperstar") but some of the production on their stuff is terrible. |

Yeah, I love that album more than any of the 3 I've heard.... but the production is excruciating at times. Lo-fi is one thing but... haa.
Good shit though. |

i like the production because it shows that its not impossible to get that kind of sound.

No, I don't get that.
It's very easy to get that type of sound. A few layers of trebly guitar overdubs recorded through a computer mic. That's how it sounds to me. Haha. |

Check out Alcest - www.myspace.com/alcestmusic.
It's the solo project of some bloke called Neige who has been in many different black metal bands in the past, it's not strictly shoegaze, although you still might like it. |

Scarling. are pretty good (well, their first album not so much, but the rest)
I second Red Lorry Yellow Lorry Astral are awesome. The Chameleons (UK) are neither goth nor shoegaze but they're somewhere in between. Claire Voyant are pretty neat. FUCKING Mira!!! Love Spirals Downward... if you want some stuff influenced by slowcore, you can't go wrong with anything by Lycia...

if people are going to recommend alcest, then also jesu, nadja and the goslings.
i've seen nadja and the goslings being reviewed as pseudo-goth along with the usual shoegaze metal crap tag. and jesu, well, they have a song with jarboe. now that i think about it, you should check out the album jarboe and justin broadrick did, released earlier this year. i liked it even if it's not mindblowing. ohhh, the angelic process too; actually, i think they are the most goth while still being shoegazer of the ones i mentioned in this post. |

Xasthur - usually defined as ambient black metal, but gothy shoegaze also fits.
