Everyone needs to just chill out because you can't do anything about it. If the earth blows up, then the earth blows up. People seem to have a real hard time accepting things that they have no control over.

what if hawkins made a fundamental mistake in his theories decades ago.... surely all his arguement would be inaccurate and widely wrong then..
im not saying he did, just posing an interesting hypothetical situation on this world! hawkins in a real international treasure. i saw a bbc doc about him a few months ago, totally strange character, totally meglointellectual! compelling viewing..... |

just keep chillin. it will all work out in the end. we're probably not going to get blown up, and even if we do, it's not the end of the world. or is it?

The big difference is that relativity and gravitation can be checked or tested on earth , unlike black holes which are out of reach. Plus , they absorb light and everything that comes near ; I've read they're the less known objects in the universe. To me , Hawking theory is just an hypothesis ( but I'm no expert , as you can guess ). |

theories do not just sit around man, people are constantly looking to topple them, to prove them wrong, or to gather evidence of their correectness. the scientists at CERN said "anyone who thinks the world is goiing to end because of the LHC is a twit." hahah! twit!

hypothesis are guesses made before any experiment, theories are explanations based on all current evidence and taking into account all current knowledge. two wholy different things. Hawking understands quantum mechanics as well as anyone can. it is a strange strange science, and none of it fits "common sense", because "common sense" only applies to the human macro level of the universe (what goes up must come down. wate flows downhill, bend it and it will break eventually, etc.) in the quantum world superfluids flow UPHILL against gravity, supersolids allow other material to pass through without seeming solid! etc.
