Laughing Clowns, Ed Kuepper's band after he left the band in 77. Sounds a bit like early Saints but with trumpets and saxaphones. It gets pretty wild and loose in parts.

I've just realised that at the very start of this thread I should have listed a top four and included Silver Ray (Guitar, Piano, Drums trio - like GYBE if they got to see the sum from time to time), whose New Love CD is beautiful.

junkyard yes atari, and inxs did make some good albums but on that scale they are nowhere as good as anything midnite oil put out, and all the early "garage / grunge" like the scientists, kim salmon and the surrealists, hoodoo gurus (70s / early 80s period) the hardons, the necks, the dirty three, nick cave and the bad seeds (albeit probably more of an international than anyone continent) kill anything inxs did

actually, sonic youth is one of the only bands i love every single thing they have released equally, it's also my ideal band, i think everything they do is genius and even their side stuff ranges from great to out of this world. i do love all of sonic youth's output, i just don't like dumbed down popularity contests (the ddn vs sis poll) and i was just pointing out the stupidity of the thread. about avril lavigne, i might be one of the few people in here who actually enjoys to listen to (good) pop music, i don't have a problem with that kind of music at all and i'm surprised you don't like some of that stuff atari. i admit that imagewise, most pop music is horrible and the marketing behind it is pretty disgusting, but if you take that out of the picture (as i pointed out on the avril thread) i do like the songs, i like both the craft behind a song and the melodic treatments throughout. i'm certainly not into the whole mascara, faux-skater goth aspect of avril and her fans, but i count it as if i just listen to a cd-r without any notes or anything and popped it into a player, i would like the songs a lot (unlike, say, a lindsay lohan album, because the songs are not as well done). about silverchair, most people fell for the image when they started, the whole "sassy teen nirvana", which is sad because they are a great band, especially their last two albums, neon ballroom and diorama, in which they started to expand their sound to include orchestral elements and electronica to their music, and diorama in particular, favors strange arrangements and different influences in each song. van dyke parks did most of the string arrangements in that one. they are very talented songwriters; i do like their first couple of albums even, which i find them to sound more like helmet meets black sabbath with a very melodic singing voice on top. again, it's not something everybody would like, but i find their music to be very creative and inspired, also very envelope-pushing. that's a very sweet afri boot, just repaying some of what you've shared. |

Silverchair?I normally do not judge people because of their taste in music but, Jesus on a horse,Silverchair suck so bad i can only imagine people who listen to them to be retarded office workers.Avril Lavigne is beyond any comprehension too.Unless you are in the business of just winding people up.

just curious about the envelope silverchair have been pushing, does it have an australia post post mark on it, i agree they a good, dont like their music and i don't believe any envelope has been pushed, licked, opened, closed, deglued, stamped, posted, received, addressed, retruned to sender. aussie rock really came to a fore in the early 80s and then created the path that the seatle movement followed in the early 90's. mudhoney are influenced by the scientsts quite a bit.

I really like Radio Birdman and the Celibate Rifles, and the Saints. The Birthday Party is good too. Wolfmother is ok. There debut album was kinda all over the place, but Im sure with time, they'll be pretty good.

Silverchair catch a lot of undeserved flack. Their later records weren't much, but Frogstomp was pretty impressive. Especially if you think that they were only teenagers when that record was made. Give props where they are due.
