i was just in marfa with the sonic and the judd and the aliens and i think the sun baked my brain through the car windshield... but i was thinking the cast of basquiat plays sonic youth:

David Bowie as Andy Warhol as Thurston Moore

Gary Oldman as Julian Schnabel as Lee Ranaldo

Dennis Hopper as Whoever He Was as Steve Shelley

Claire Forlani as Gina Cardinale as Kim Gordon

Benicio del Toro as Whoever He Was as Jim O'Rourke

.....the seinfeld version would probably be a lot funnier though.....

Okay, this completely abandons the fun of this thread (matching the noise idols to appropriate or grossly inappropriate casting choices), but consider this for a moment.

What if there was a fiction film that chronicled the early days of Sonic Youth in the 1980's, say from their first gig to the first show with Steve Shelley, but every single person who has ever been in the band was played by THEMSELVES circa 2007.

This is a wild, self-consciously avant-garde, Luis Bunuel/Todd Haynes/Todd Solondz casting strategy, yes. But who else could actually pretend to be these human beings? Although as I hear it the guy playing Ian Curtis in the Joy Division movie is spot-on. As a final note, this very topic was considered in an interview that Mike D. recorded with the band once featured somewhere on this sight. Kim wanted Sarah Polley to play her.
