I haven't heard too much of Daniel Johnston's work, but what I have heard I find really great. And the film seems really good. I'm interested in seeing it.
I haven't seen the Half Japanese one either, damn.

There's a great compilation if you wanna start, credited to the Late Great Daniel Johnston, called Discovered Covered.
2 disks, with his work on one, and covers on the other. So that if you don't like him or a specific period in his work, you can appreciate the covers (done by Tom Waits, M. Ward or Bright Eyes to name the ones I dug). His site regularly provides mp3 to get to know him a bit better - and you'll have the visuals too. http://www.rejectedunknown.com/multi...udio/audio.htm My favorite is Rejected Unknown, and is quite recent. And Some Things Last A Long Time on 1990 is really moving. |

Man, "arist growing old" and "joy without pleasue" are my top two faves. All of his early stuff is so raw and honest.
http://www.rejectedunknown.com/press.../Mondo2000.htm here's an interview where he mentions sonic youth Quote:

Joy Without Pleasure is indescribable man. The lyrics are some of the best ever. They're so darn simple, it almost feels like something you could've written.
The song makes me wanna live with my parents for a couple more years |

Right on swa(y). It's hard for me to compare people to Dylan. Their both geniuses for sure.
Anyone know what song my sig is from? It's one of my favorite Dan songs |

I just got back from Daniel Johnston & Friends, live! OFF THE HOOK! He closed with 'true love will find you in the end'. Also, for a long time, Scout Niblett was staring into my eyes and into my soul and it was weird.

I went from really liking him to seeing the movie and then finding his music a bit on the disturbing side to the point where I just couldn't listen to it and now I love him again. Well, his early stuff at least. Anything after 1990 does nothing for me. It's a bit sad to watch the guy nowadays, especially stuff like this.
Regardless, at his peak, there's no doubt that the guy was an absolutely brilliant songwriter. |

I really don't think he's ever been a great songwriter. He's just crazy. I do like his music, because he's a very interesting person, but I'd need a pretty convincing arguement to call him anything more than "decent".
Although, "Story Of An Artist", I have to say, is very nearly great. So is "Some Things Take a Long Time", but I wonder how much input he had in the production of it. |
