But in all seriousness, i have a fairly standard indie rock taste i think. I Like The Fall and Can and Swans, and i like Big Black, Anti-pop consortium, 65daysofstatic and Godspeed You black emperor, but i think thats the limit of my weird tastes at the minute. Ive never met another person who knows who Swans or The Fall or Can are.
But i tried to listen to Nurse with wound (as introduced to me by this forum) and its just too much for me. Although i suspect it might make sense to me one day. I still think Dinosaur Jr are overrated beyond belief. I dont like to think that Teenage Riot is about J Mascis, he just seems like a tosser. |

Some of these posts are among the best reading I've seen on a fan board lately. Really good stuff people !
I don't know what to add...Rob, you've pegged it man..really pegged it ! I come from growing up with the pop 60s..into psychedelia...Zeppelin, that whole HEAVY thing..Deep Purple, Sabbath etc...then got into early mid 70s Prog Rock ala King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant, Zappa etc...so I really took a leap during that time..and got into Progressive Jazz as well. So in the mid 70s when everyone else was listening to Aerosmith, Journey, Nugent schlock...I had my nose in the air !! hahahah....nah, just listened to more engaging...INTELLIGENT music....! After awhile I sorta reverted and seized the Punk thing...and even with that got into the 'progressive' punk...like how Wire evolved so quickly....and a few others that leaped like mad from punk to a more sophisticated sound...ala XTC. I went to Hawaii and Jamaica alot in the mid 80s...sorta 'dropped out' of the music scene...then got back into it in the late 80s, early 90s...Talk Talk, The The, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Nirvana etc...mid 90s Portishead, Los Lobos, Sneaker Pimps, Lucious Jackson...others... But I've always enjoyed a wide variety..something that grabs me...usually stuff that reveals itself more and more with repeated listenings...but not always...I like the simple too... But SY is all of it to me...they go from the noise rock to beautiful 'pop' ...the most splendid 'pop' I've heard lately....like Incinerate. I dig it. And it's some of the most simple stuff SY has ever done....is it evolution or just something different ?..who knows...who knows what or why you'll enjoy something..it becomes so personal.... But this thread is great....hope I didn't bore you...

I like to think of myself as having a broader music taste (thanks to you fans on the board, though I have always been tolerant of other genres of music outside rock). Hell, I have a broader music taste than many "music fans" I know at school.

I think that the only thing that really connects SY fans is an openness to non-mainstream art forms. I don't think we can be pigeonholed any more than that.

Morning, Jon Boy. I'm quite surprised by that. I mean, we all have our likes and dislikes, but I don't see us as a group of people who will write things off without even giving it a chance.

I have very little in common with most people on here and the ones i think i might have something in common with,it's not because of Sonic Youth.I know many people who don't really listen to their music but still get by with dignity in their own lives.

[quote=Rob Instigator]that's odd. I have found, in the 16 or so years I have been listeing to sonic youth supreme number one, that sonic youth fans, REAL fans (meaning people who actually enjoy the music, not just name drop them cuz they own dirty) have extremely wide range in music tastes.
quote] That is entirely true but it doesn't have to be necesseraly because of them.I didn't start listening to techno, house, hip hop or world music because of Sonic Youth for sure.In fact there is tons of stuff that has had more of an influence on my music taste than them as a band(library music and 60's odds and sods to name some).Generally speaking,i think that the actual music of this band has only had a limited impact on today's music making as such but created an attitude towards it all their own. What a musician or music fan makes with that is their own choice, for better or worse. |

You are right porkmarras, but I never said that those wide tastes are "because" of sonic youth. I was just attempting to see what traits people who happen to be great sonic youth fans share.
