2 Carter Family - Chewing Gum 4 5 The first two are definitive in the top spot. The other 3 are just the first 3 that came to mind. All of them make me weep with glee. As is true of any list, this doesn't include the Fall or Hank Williams because I couldn't choose for either. Fuck me, ATR were fucking amazing...

Ok here we go.
5. Silver Jews - Random Rules - This song can do whatever you want it to - break your heart, make a great car drive even better, a drinking song etc. The lyrics are unreal too, I know lots has been said about the song having 'the greatest opening line in history', but the rest of the song really says something too. 4. HUM - Apollo - one soft guitar line running through the entire song, a perfect vocal delivery,... 6 minutes of healing. Its a bummer when you and your girlfriend can't get things right with the space between each other - something that is hard to convey in a song, but is done perfectly here. 3. Sonic Youth - Sweet Shine - I didn't know Kim had in her, the melody is perfect - the lyrics are amazing. The song is a total downer... 2. Pavement - Pueblo - This song is the perfect jam, and I often wonder why it wasn't stretched out into 10+ minutes of slow-surf exctacy. If you listen to the 'Beach Boys' version on the Crooked Rain deluxe you'll see what I mean. This song just gets you baked. 1. Smashing Pumpkins - Hummer --> Has everything, soft, loud, the best solo of all time, encouraging lyrics. This song has probably racked up more listens in my life then any other song, still moves me. Comes in very casual/inoffensive and then just takes you for a lazy summer trip. Honourable Mentions: Pavement - Frontwards - makes the most boring chord progression the best song ever. Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 - who doesn't like this song? Some Velvet Morning - in all its incarnations, the slowdive one ? 12RODS - Summertime Vertigo - unbelievable feedbacking and plain ol' rock made into the ultimate off-kilter hook song. (ala 'tired of sex', ...only waaaay better). My list has a lot of breezey/mid-tempo tunes, kind of songs half way between rocker/ballad... I just have a thirst for them I guess. Alot of epics too... I think a lot of them merry talented musicianship with an ear for texture and dynamics. |

Introitus of Mozart's Requiem. Skull crushing kick in the face good. The rest ain't too shabby either.
Johnny Cash's version of Sunday Morning Coming Down Perfect Day - Lou Reed. It's really not that great of a song, but it reminds me of someone I miss. Freight Train - Elizabeth Cotten. One of my favorites for a long long time. One of the few songs I ever bothered learning how to play on guitar. Cool Water - Hank Williams |
