I think for a relatively small-time band like them, being stuck up is even better. You can't help but admire it. And it's kind of hilarious.

Suicide, most def cheack their first album. Synth and vocals duo from new York.
From Australia (sort of no wave-ish bands anyway) The Birthday party, pretty much everything they did was awesome. Slugfuckers, they have a compilation called Cacophony. They are really messed up, I can't imagine them getting more than 40 people at their shows from 1979-81. Primitive Calculators, also great. I can't really get into any new No Wave bands as with most of them sound really forced or like the sit down to write songs and think "how do we sound like a no-wave band".

There's some really good stuff on this website, I'm sure you'll find something you like:

If you google no wave, you'll probably get Teenage jesus and the jerks as one of the many results.

Ah, the Birthday Party. Such a very, very good band. Not strictly what I understand by no-wave - there's too many bits of other ideas in there... Cave's lyrics, written in blood-stained needles... there's the showtune element and all these excellent ideas... no-wave always seems more about a singular, anti-rock aesthetic. Mars/ Early SY are my favourites of NY no-wave.
Not being any help, but a hearty recommendation for the Birthday Party. Were I inclined to make lists, Junkyard would be in one, or more, of those lists.

no-wave was pretty much a term penned for the No New York album, in what way do James Chance and Mars sound anything alike?

Very true Glice... the Birthday Party had nothing to do with No Wave... just leave it to good old Wikipedia to neatly define it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_wave It was a very short lived movement that has subsequently inspired a thousand bands... there is a definite need for a book/collection of writing that once and for all reveals the definitive story behind this amazing period in New York. Come on W/frost pull your finger out!.

Stupidest thing I've ever heard. It is music. Being stuck-up was part of the act. Eric Paul isn't really a complete asshole.
