i wasn't aware usbm was hot property at the moment, but i can understand why people would be keen to get every leviathan release they can get their hands on, everything i've heard from him is fantastic and it has that always different always the same thing going on.

every limited edition thing leviathan, xasthur, etc release usually is gone in a matter of days; it has to do with the whole southern lord scene.

oh right. well i guess it was only a matter of time before the self-imposed obscurity of black metal was broken down due to the wealth of excellent music. but then i'm relatively new (2 years) to black metal myself.

the thing is, for the longest time, the metal community shun off brutal raw black metal; it was either the big trve kvlt norweigan bands (burzum, mayhem, darkthrone; emperor especially) or the symphonic goth pop bm bands like cradle of filth and dimmu borgir the ones getting attention. the terrorizer crowd was into like deathspell omega and funeral mist, sort of trying to give it some props, but usbm is kinda like it's own entity, especially because most people into it are more likely to be into boris, corrupted and sunn o))) than, say, thorns or satyricon. if you think about it, black metal is very divided.

the symphonic stuff i don't like at all, people say the first cradle of filth and dimmu borgir albums are good, but i'd rather investigate the brutal and weird stuff myself.

the first cradle is cheesy as hell!! it's darkthrone-like song, and then some stupid satanic shit with pitch shifted vocals ritual kinda interlude which i thought of as bm skits, then another darkthrone-like song, then another skit. a friend once said that cof could replace the singer dude with a fax machine, he's right.
the first dimmu i haven't heard and probably won't hear, i saw them live, gayest metal band i've seen in concert so far (i'm yet to see manowar but i bet they come close). good symphonic stuff: some early satyricon, sigh, some emperor...dissection are more melodic than symphonic so i can't really lump them, still ace band they were, i kick myself for not going to see them a year ago. |

i'm not that fond of sigh, they have some tunes that i like but it just gets to ridiculous with all the styles they incorporate in to their music, it just seems to go against the whole misanthropic spirit of BM.

yeah, they are not too grim; first time i heard them i felt that, but they have like their own feel, they are different and have good songs in that style, i dig that.

I don't know if Sunn O))) fall into the realm of black metal...
The thing that turns me off from black metal is the whole Satanism thing...or really not so much the whole Satanism thing so much as the whole "look at us, we're so evil" thing-Slayer and Venom openly admit that the whole "devil worship" thing is for show only; the black metallers on the other hand, live and die by that, burning down churches and kill each other and shit. I saw this documentary on heavy metal and they had a segment on black metal where they were talkiong to this guy from the band Gorgoroth, and the interviewer asked him, "What do you think Gorgoroth stand for, as a band?" The guy just sat there for a few moments, before saying in one breath, "...Satan." Another thing I don't like is the whole "once you have more than a small following you're a sellout" bullshit (of course you have that in other forms of underground music)...years ago, everyone in the black metal community loved Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir; now that they've become more popular, God forbid (or Satan forbid), everyone hates them. |

varg vikernes (burzum) is in jail for 21 years for killing euronymous and for burning various churches, also tried to escape a few years back.

actually, everyone hates dimmu and craper of shit because they suck. it's mostly talk since burzum, darkthrone, mayhem, etc. remain as untouchable avatars of the genre yet they are still the biggest selling "trve" bands of the genre (unlike dimmu who are second generation AND opportunists, saying in early interviews how euronymous loved them and wanted to sign them when it wasn't the case and had to deny those quotes); another thing to consider is emperor who are amongst the most well known, sell a lot of records and have softened their sound the times over and remain genre favorites. same thing with indie or whatever, no one dares say a negative word towards nirvana yet are one of the most well known bands of all time. |
