So my wife and I are in downtown Atlanta with a friend who has chosen to wear this tee-shirt. I can't tell you how freaking freaked out and embarassed I was to find him wearing this shirt. He's an idiot.

Tell me about it. So we get on the elevator to our hotel floor. We're surrounded by not one white face. I didn't know what to do. Every eye was focused on this idiot's shirt. My wife and I had been exchanging a few words of conversation with an older black woman before getting on the elevator about how friendly everybody in the city was, and then she looked at HIM and went, "Oh, but I don't know, I'm not sure he's very friendly." God damn. I wanted to crawl into a hole.

The whole gun-toting Charlie Heston thing is annoying as fuck sometimes. If I wasn't from/in the South I wouldn't believe that a shirt like that even existed.

This guy does this kind of shit on purpose. He's a total redneck and flaunts it, even at the risk of putting himself and people around him in danger. I think he does it even more around us because he knows we're "liberals."
And he's a licensed gun carrier. Christ. I am not doing anything like this with this guy again. It's tough because he's the husband of my wife's best friend. The good thing is we live far enough away from them that these days we usually don't do that much with them on a regular basis. The guy is totally paranoid. He's truly afraid of the world, thinks that blacks and Mexicans are out to get "us" and that they're all welfare-sucking parasites on the system. I just don't think like him. I never feel unsafe anywhere unless I've accidently driven into the "bad" part of town. But this guy feels paranoid everywhere. Downtown, suburbia, the country, it doesn't matter.

Yes. The guy doesn't work, hasn't for a couple of years, because he's on disability, and his wife, who makes good money, completely supports him. So for the past couple years he's developed this "I'm totally free to do anything" attitude--because he is accountable to nobody. And his wife completely tolerates his idiotic behavior--she just thinks he's "funny."
You know, some people would handle that freedom in a completely different way, make some sane use of it. He's completely abused it by making an ass of himself, using it as permission to be rude and offensive.

Yeah.
Like, think of the most juvenile guy you knew in junior high. Put him in an adult body, give him lots of money and toys, a gun, and a paranoid, racist, homophobic outlook. I hate to rag on the guy because I used to really like him. He used to be much nicer. He was always "conservative" in his outlook but it was tolerable, not outrageous. My wife and I were never happier to get home.
