The first record I ever got was Bad Moon, I got it on a whim in 8th grade and after the 3rd listen, I was blown away.

I started off with daydream nation. looking back i think it was the perfect intro to sonic youth. It prepared me for rather ripped, as well as some of their more experimental efforts.

I put sister on for a friend, said, "flick through to get your track". She ended up flicking right through to the end.

what Sonic Youth CD would you recommend as a starter for SY newbie? I would say Murray Street would be ideal - it's accessible and has some great tunes on it while not turning back on experimental soundscapes and feedback paranoia at times (Karen Revisited). Dirty would do as well.

what do you think?

I think I've seen all this before and so have you, but it's still a good topic (as topics these days go).

Should I copy and paste-in my list from all the other SY cd-r primer threads this time?...Nah!

I don't wanna
I don't think so

As a starter I suppose you can just say get "Daydream Nation" first, if you love it get whatever SY album sounds appealing from there, Daydream Nation is sort of SY bridging the gap of artsy and mainstream sound. Its like saying if you don't have any Pink Floyd albums which to get first, and most will get "The Wall" simply because its the most talked about and most played in terms of radio-played songs.

Daydream Nation. If you don't like it then I doubt you'll get much out of any of their LPs. It has elements that you'll find in all of them.

The first SY song ever I listened to was "I love her all the time" and it blew my mind immediately. Not meaning Bad Moon Rising would be good for newbies, but that song is (at least for me.)
After that I'd say Evol. You know the advice? "Give it to your little sister in her birthday..."

I know a friend whose first SY song that he truly loved was "Contre le sexisme". I mean, the more people, the more tastes.

Just make shure you don't start with Sonic Death. It was the first thing I heard by SY and it scared the shit out of me.

Rather Ripped is by far the most accessible, but I find it a little misleading -even if someone likes RR, it doesn't mean they'll like other stuff, because RR is really quite different, its very simple, with very clean production, and virtually noise-free...

I would personally get someone into SY with DDN. Its their definitve album, and, although this is not always the case, if you don't like DDN, you probably won't like Sonic Youth.

No, sorry, exclamationatnumberdollarpercentexclamation. Compilation albums are apparently lame and lazy. Or that's what I was told when I said that Nick Cave's "Best of" is a good starting point for someone wanting to try out his post-Birthday party stuff.

nick cave is nick cave, but find ONE thing that is wrong with this compilation and i might concede your point (if i actually got your point), otherwise this remains a series of one glorious musical moment after another, which summarizes sy's excellent 80's output

beat this tracklist:
  1. "Teen Age Riot" – 6:58
  2. "Eric's Trip" – 3:49
  3. "Candle" – 4:59
  4. "Into the Groove(y)" – 4:35
  5. "G-Force" – 3:40
  6. "Beauty Lies in the Eye" – 2:17
  7. "Kotton Krown" – 5:08
  8. "Shadow of a Doubt" – 3:34
  9. "Expressway to Yr. Skull" – 7:08
  10. "Starpower" – 4:49
  11. "Death Valley '69" – 5:10
  12. "Halloween" – 5:09
  13. "Flower" – 3:36
  14. "Inhuman" – 4:01
  15. "Making the Nature Scene" – 3:00
  16. "Brother James" – 3:12
  17. "I Dreamed I Dream" – 5:19
(those are wikipedia links btw)

that record fucking RULES!

of course i love evol the best, but my personal favorite does not necessarily make a good intro. this one does.

---

perhaps there was irony in your post? i didnt really get if you had actually been convinced of what supposedly was your mistake.

Agreed. Go For Goo, its got great pop songs but its fair share of experimental tendencies too, and the production is much easier on the ear than DDN. First few listens i mean of course.
