Somehow I forgot two very important prog bands: Jethro Tull and the Nice. Jehtro is as impostant as King Crimson to me, The Nice is after Hawkwind. I also like a lot Beggars Opera album act one. I also have quite unknown band Brahman album in the same name that is also quite good. And there are some Finnish great prog bands: Tasavallan Presidentti, Tabula Rasa and Nova.

No mention of Area?
Demetrio Stratos was a huge influence on Mike Patton. |

These days I probably listen to 'Discipline' the most out of the King Crimson catalogue.

Hawkwind are one of my very favorite bands ever, but they are "space rock" to me, rather than "progressive rock." Too few IQ points, too simple of structures.

Thereīs still 2 bands I have to mention: Colosseum and Procol Harum. I think many thinks Colosseum is Jazz-Blues-Rock fusion band, but they have one of the first one vinyl side long songs in their second album. I have also one album from Colosseum II, but I like the first one much more!

I know many thinks Hawkwind isnīt prog rock. But if you compare the band from King Crimson at seventies, itīs not very far from that band. Both have very beatiful melodies, both have used mellotron. I think the complexity of structures is not the main thing in prog rock, to me most important is kind of "otherly world feeling" prog rock bring to me. Somebody has mentioned Blue Öyster Cult in this thread, I can understand why, but i didnīt mention it because many put it into hard rock genre. On the other hand in Hard rock/heavy there are lots of prog elements, for example Black Sabbath have used mellotron and strings and synths, Led Zeppelin Mellotron, Iron Maiden have complexity in songs (for example Rhyme of the ancient mariner, Seventh Son of a Seventh son) etc. To me almost all the music I listen, I mean music that just donīt do exactly same thing that some else before is prog rock. So I can say even Sonic Youth is prog rock. What I really think is that all kind of categorising of music is kind of stupid. All that matters to me do the music gives me strong feelings. of couse we need some terms to discuss music, but thatīs stupid if somebody starts to say "itīs not prog or itīs not punk etc". I think the most boring music is that kind itīs doing all the things what belongs into itīs genre. |

My prog tastes are a little more "traditional" than the Zeul/RIO stuff listed here, behold I'm a huge Magma and Univers Zero fan, I'm more into stuff like Van Der Graaf Generator, T2, Swedish stuff like Trettiargia Kriget and Trad, Gras Och & Stenar, Italian stuff like Le Orme, Osanna, Prematia Forneria Marconi and of course really obvious stuff like Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis, some King Crimson (Court, Posideon, Larks, Lizard, Islands, the Red era never did much for me), Wishbone Ash, Black Widow......
There's some newer stuff I'm absolutely obsessed with as well, the guys in Reverend Bizarre (the best doom band in the last 15 years) have a side project called Orne that is one of my favorite albums of all time, Diagonal from England are GREAT and there's a Swedish band called Black Bonzo who have put out three incredible sounding albums. |
