Play tritones.

e|-----------------11
B|-------------10----
G|----------8--------
D|-------7-----------
A|----6--------------
E|--5----------------

Not exclusively, of course, but if you incorporate them right it will sound really dark.

A|----------------------------------3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3--------

Kinda like that, or something, I guess. The technique translates all over the fretboard, too. Just go up a string and back a fret, or down a string and up a fret (or two frets if you're going from the G to B string). It doesn't even really matter what key you're in. It almost always works.

Yeah, I was doing stuff similiar to this in my riffs already, but I never thought to incorporate it to such a degree. It sounds fucking great. Thanks man.

Some of you might like this:

MALA AGUA - UNRELEASED 1998 SELF-TITLED ALBUM
http://www.sendspace.com/file/2bbzi5

It's like 14mb, really dark and good surf. The whole album was recorded by one guy though live there were a couple of guys. Anyway, the dude who recorded all this hung himself before the album was released. I got it from a friend of a friend who was going to release this through his record label and wanted people to record covers of all the songs as tributes (of course I wasn't a good enough musician to cover these at the time, and I don't think album ever came out anyway). Really good, creepy shit...

they might be giants were playing the exact same clubs and gigs as sonic youth, and all the other 1980-1984 NYC avant garde bands. they were never "alternative" that bullshit term did not even exist for the first 6 years of TMBG existance.

they are fucking musical geniuses.

See?.. I like that... And even though I haven't really listened to them, I can appreciate that and would probably agree if I heard them... I'm glad you distinguished between melodic and musical.

I dnt know what TMBG has to do with surf BUT they had tons of great stuff throughout their career. I've sort of had it with them now, but APOLLO is an incredibly solid album, most of their first decade was really good.

So I'll provide a link....

http://www.bar-none.com/bios/raybio.html

It's no wonder Guitar Player magazine called the Raybeats' GUITAR BEAT "one of the ten best instrumental albums of all time." A supercombo with members of the B-52's (Pat Irwin), the Golden Palominos (Jody Harris), and Los Straitjackets (Danny Amis), the Raybeats formed out of the ashes of legendary New York no-wavers the Contortions. During the early 80's they were one of the most popular touring bands on the underground rock scene. Their music blended the best of instrumental pop music: surf rock, lounge and Stax/Volt soul together with the experimental no-wave sound of downtown NYC. Bar/None is proud to release GUITAR BEAT for the first time on Compact Disc, complete with extra tracks, rare vintage photos, new liner notes, memorabilia and more!

Someone in real life reccomended this to me today. Someone who has no idea about this thread and who I wasn't even talking about surf in particular to. He has a copy of this on vinyl and he's like "man have you heard the Raybeats? You should check em out." I was like, "Yeah, someone ont he internet mentioned them the other day."

Weird.

Thanks for the link, I'll have to check a lot of that stuff out. The only thing I listen to off that list regularly is Deadbolt and they are excellent.

Weird.

Cool coincidence !!

I saw the Raybeats in Dallas in 1981 at the HotClub and they were fine !! Then in Nashville a couple of years ago I met the lead guitarist on a fluke ! Sometimes things aren't so obscure.

open question to anyone:

What would you consider early Superdrag to be? I hear a lot of surf influence in their sound, especially some of the vocal harmonies/melodies and the drums. But should they be considered surf rock?

My guess is no, but im not an expert on surf rock. It's definitely a genre I have been meaning to get more into. The Tsunami Soul Surf Music page has been up on my browser's collection of tabs since this thread was created.
