What are Godard's films about? Movies, moviemaking, absurdism, how Godard doesn't understand women, and some vague political gestures. There's also a big biographical aspect to his work.

movies about movies? they are meta-movies?
I like movies that are about movies being made about a TV show.

Meta-movies is an excellent term for it... then again I've only seen 3 of his movies.

Well.. he was the first director to really be super self referential. he also filmed with no script usually. So, everything is just kinda made up, and usually reflects his life at the moment, he puts a lot of his own personal drama in his films. But EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS FILMS has a reference to filmmaking, some more than others.
Godard's just all over the place. there's just something about his anarchic editing, mood, etc. that really appeals to me. I can see it being abit much for some people, but his later, slower, more static works are just amazing beyond words. As usual, I gotta reccomend every man for himself/slow motion/whatever the french term for it is. Just insanely dark and beautiful. |

my absolute fav criterions. i capitalized the ones i'm particularly fanatical about.
- all godards (though especially pierrot le fou, tout va bien, and I heard week end is coming out through criterion, which would be awesome... though all my favorite godard stuff is later, like slow motion and hail mary) - HAUSU - spirit of the beehive - the killer - CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 - THE FIRE WITHIN - shock corridor - HIGH AND LOW - long good friday - picnic at hanging rock - andrei rublev - BRANDED TO KILL (in my top 10 films ever, they're re-releasing it with a new print finally) - BLOW OUT (ditto) - TOKYO DRIFTER - ARIEL - WHO ARE YOU POLLY MAGOO? - taste of cherry - insomnia - unbearable lightness of being - NAKED (almost in my top 10 films ever) - life of brian - VAGABOND - element of crime - L'AVVVENTURA and any other Antonioni films they released - DOG STAR MAN - MAN BITES DOG! - IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE - 8 1/2! - WILD STRAWBERRIES - THE VANISHING - how to get ahead in advertising - symbiopsychotaxiplasm take 1 - KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE - CRIES AND WHISPERS and any other Bergmans - DOUBLE SUICIDE - schizopolis - ali: fear eats the soul (they've released a few fassbinder things -- including the 16 hour berlin alexanderplatz, but to be honest, they haven't released any of his best films -- pretty much the first 15 films he did are all masterpieces, especially love is colder than death and god of the plagues) - THE PORNOGRAPHERS - KNIFE IN THE WATER - DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST and all other Bresson films (especially if they released Pickpocket) - FLOATING WEEDS and other Ozus - 3 WOMEN and any Altmans - VIDEODROME - SLACKER - EYES WITHOUT A FACE - my own private idaho - f for fake - phantom of liberty - THE GAME (this isn't out yet, but it's a cool film being criterion'd soon) - bad timing - RAN - MURMUR OF THE HEART - AU REVOIRE LES ENFANTS - LA COMBE LUCIEN - ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS - TAKE AIM A TTHE POLICE VAN - LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON - CLEAN, SHAVEN - DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE - SWEETIE - la haine - VENGEANCE IS MINE - SWEET MOVIE - IF.... - FACE OF ANOTHER - NIGHT ON EARTH - two-lane blacktop - CHUNGKING EXPRESS - MISSING - FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE - THE HIT - LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD - JEANNE DIELMAN 23 QUA DU COMMENCE 1080 BRUELLES (actually, that chantal akerman box set is probably my favorite criterion release, period, especially for the movie "NEWS FROM HOME") - PARIS, TEXAS - COLOSSAL YOUTH - CLOSE-UP - REVANCHE - CRUMB - FIVE EASY PIECES - DRIVE, HE SAID - safe place |

they've done a great job with their blu-rays. i own "8 1/2," "pierrot le fou," "the seventh seal," and i rented "the red desert" the other week. they look great in their previous DVD transfers, but i never thought they could look that great. the colors on "pierrot le fou" and "the red desert" in particular are amazing.

The only Criterion that I've watched recently that I DIDN'T like was Homicide. Didn't seem at all anything special.
I can't wait to see Thin Red Line Criterion. |

The worst Criterion movie, imo, is brandupon the brain, or fat girl. They're usually a pretty consistent movie released company but I could barely get through those. I don't really like Wes Anderson, either (Rushmore is pretty decent though), something like Darjeeling Limited just didn't do anything for me.
