I always see hits are for squares at starbucks. I never would buy it obviously, but I like reading the back every time I go to remind myself Tobias Funke likes Mary-Christ.

ha! this is fucking funny.... hits are for squares only gettable in a few starbucks in the states....i live in ireland, i got 2 fucking copies and ive never ever been to the usa or a starbucks.......one a mate got me in nyc and another i found second hand in a record shop bargain bin here in ireland for about a fiver!!! 33-50 dollars on ebay..ha, funny!!!! btw, the second hand copy has been taken!......
as for radiohead, there is a reason why they put out in rainbows for no price...it isnt very good, bar about 3 or 4 songs and radiohead knew that, guarantee that their next album will be out for 19.99 with no added extras and maybe an enhanced cd with links to buy more stuff.... it is a music "business" not a music "charity store"....... |

Yes, and that business was created and founded on genuine artists' blood, sweat and tears, not by businessmen. It's not naive to want to maintain a spirit of goodwill between bands and artists, especially when it's at the expense of greed and big soulless companies. It's no different from having a union at your workplace. But, no, this isn't a union, and the music business is a cold, heartless thing, but that doesn't excuse one of the biggest selling bands (Radiohead) from cheap big-business marketing tricks which are designed to make them look better than everyone else, because they can afford to do it. It doesn't especially offend me that they did it because I see through Radiohead anyway, but KG's point is valid.

the most funny thing about this whole thing is that radiohead never claimed to be the kings of alternative music destroying the corporate labels and offering free music for everyone.
press made it look like a revolution, and predictable as it was, every single artist started ranting.. but anyone who really knows the band can easily say it wasn't meant to destroy small young bands and or/be revolutionary/be thought of as a charity store. I enjoyed it. the day of the download-relase i woke up at 5 and we were all on msn complaining about how the album sucked and how good the new songs were.

Another good Kim interview.
I especially agree with her on Radiohead, as much as I love the album. |

Kim is forgetting that Radiohead are far better than most smaller bands. They deserve their fame.

If In Rainbows cost $16, people would have complained.
In Rainbows was free...people still complained. Wow. |

It's a bit rich of Kim to go on about a "community", when she wasn't exactly crying tears of remorse when SY dumped Blast First and Enigma for Geffen. The whole "In Rainbows" saga was simply Radiohead telling EMI to fuck off, and a way to get out of a contract. Certainly Radiohed have always looked up to the likes of REM in terms of "being on major label on own terms" success, and Thom Yorke and "the boys" have craftily used "indie" cred to their own ends, just like SY did by claiming that the DGC imprint was an "indie boutique" operation (yeah, right).

Forgive me but who fucking cares what Kim says about Radiohead? As far as I'm concerned, both Sonic Youth and Radiohead are far past their prime. And if anything, Radiohead showed up Sonic Youth by releasing something more listenable than Rather Ripped.

Not to mention the fact that the way SY are marketing themselves now is even more mainstream than when they were on an actual major label. Like Matador are really an indie label anyway.

Yes, very true. I'm not sure what this whole starbucks business is about but Sonic Youth are about as far from being independent as possible.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to MellySingsDoom and Sarramkrop again.
