& regarding the YYY's, I've never heard them revered or anything or hardly talked about in my circle of friends....
I kind of enjoy some of their songs, I think the second album has some good pop writing. It's just messy pop rock, it's nothing revolutionary. Maybe that's where some of the angst comes from some ppl because you've heard ppl describe them as revolutionary or something, when obviously they're not. I think turn into is a sexy, almost beatlesque song, and karen o has a sexy voice. But is not hot. But I'd fuck her voice. Sometimes it's annoying though, but then it turns me on even more. |

Ovverrated? Sonic Youth after Sister.
Underrated? Syd Barret era floyd. Overrated? Frank Zappa's sense of 'humor' and genius. It's weird, I love all the interviews I've seen of him. I love his view on the world. then I listen to his music and it feels like some prodigy 5th grader musician, equivilant to doogie houser, but still likes fart jokes and chocolate milk wrote the songs.... |

Someone on the last page.
Mind you, I do love me some Beatles and very occasionally Smiths, but I don't appreciate them nearly as much as some do. Beatles were a boy band for like the first 5 albums after all. |

Solo john lennon is boring. beatles are not. u fuckers are forgetting yr roots.
ya the beatles were a boy band as far as the lyrics go, when they first started...but who gives a shit? yeah almost every song on please please me uses the same words, but who gives a shit? Some of those songs are pop masterpieces, blending buddy holly and motown. You can't fuck with Anna. and personally, I like Please Please Me better than SGT Peppers. I dunno, personally I feel the same way about the beatles as I do with sonic youth. When I first heard them I wasn't too impressed, then started listening on my own, fell in love with them, tried to study their catalogue best I could (moreso with beatles than sy) and learned all their songs, studied their song structures, harmonies, melodies, solos, etc. put them on a pedastol and they became my fav band for a few years each... but with everything, you reach a certain point when u realize not everything they do is gold, some of their stuff sucks, and sometimes YOU have written a better song than the idol you are trying to channel. Kill yr idols, ya know? Doesn't mean their work was overrated, or short of genius, and can't be enjoyed. I feel like aspects of the beatles and sonic youth were UNDERRATED. The Beatles were not a bunch of boy band pussies and Sonic Youth arent a bunch of assholes. Ringo was in one of Liverpool's biggest knife gangs for fuck sake, they were the first pop band to start doing heavy heavy drugs and incoorperate it's affects in their music...and still sell tons of records... Get fucked if you don't agree with everything I've just said. I'm serious :-) |

Get fucked yerself . Personally I like the beatles, but I think they are overrated in some ways. First off, who gives a shit if they wrote pop music masterpieces? I like/love pop music as much as anyone, but so? I think their lyrics are very often neutral or cringe-worthy. Also, who cares about Ringo being a violent gang banger? He still wrote "Octopus's Garden" which is one of the worst songs I have ever heard in my life by any band, and it really brings that album down as a whole. And who cares about the fact that they incorporated drug use into their music? Big shit. Drug use isn't inherently good or bad for music, so I really don't see what kind of bearing it has on the argument. That said, I like the Beatles a lot and am glad that they influenced so many artists that I like even more, but they are definitely overrated by their biggest fans. No doubt about it. You Beatles people seem to think every tiny thing they did was a revelation. Some of them were, but not as many as you like to say. |

^^A masterpiece is a masterpiece. With that logic, who care's that Sonic Youth put out something as gnarly as Evol, who care's that The Stooges inspired them, who cares about anything anyone's ever done?
Who care's how hard noise rock is. Who care's how angry a band is? Who care's how many instruments can be on one song? Who care's how fast and crazy a song is? Who care's how unique a band is? The drug use/pop band thing is because until then, everyone did exactly as they were told, no matter how fucked up their private life was. How bout this, they were one of the first bands to start writing their own songs in mainstream. Of course they are ovverrated when they get labeled "The best band of all time" by stuffy critics. And you must have missed my point about comparing sonic youth and the beatles if you think that I think everything they did was a revelation. |

What exactly are you getting at here? Because I don't really care about any of those things and they don't really have anything to do with what I said as far as I can see. Quote:
That's stupid and I don't believe it for a second. Every revolutionary band, especially the ones before and during the Beatle's era, were considered shocking by the standards of the day. The Beatles totally started out as the kind of band that did what they were told, but that's not the way everyone was and that's the reason they still can't escape the boy band thing even if it isn't exactly relevant. Quote:
Yeah, I always thought that was very interesting and impressive. Quote:
First of all, yeah I agree and that's part of what I was getting at. And second, I don't remember your point so I guess that's the case. And I was also exaggerating a little. I know you don't think EVERYTHING they did was a revelation. edit: I was always way more impressed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono than the Beatles. I think the Beatlies were very important, but Lennon and Yoko were more revolutionary in my opinion except some things that the Beatles did, like incorporating Eastern musical ideas and writing their own songs. |
