it's an interesting set of interviews and gives more insight into the band than an interview with either of the permanent members ever could |

Psychedelic Horseshit Gets Laced
February 18, 2011 By Brendan Mehan On January 31, Psychedelic Horseshit wrote a jubilant Tumblr post titled We Signed Bitches!!!!!!! in relation to the bands signing to Fatcat. After six years of battling in obscurity, eating out of dumpsters, and bitching about other lo-fi bands, the group is now happily being cared for by same family that cared for Animal Collective. The Columbus, OH duo of Matt Horseshit (real name?) and Ryan Jewell already has its (horse) shit together and announced the release of the upcoming album, Laced, on May 10. The band actually had the album recorded and ready to go when it signed to Fatcatdisappointingly (or otherwise) there wasnt some 20 day-long amphetamine-fueled recording binge or anything. Most of the album was recorded in basements and bathrooms using 40 year-old, beat up reel-to-reel tape, all helping the band stay close to the lo-fi genre that it so pleasantly deemed shitgaze. However, the album is apparently much cleaner and more electronic than any of the bands previous efforts. Psychedelic Horseshit is currently planning a tour, so stay tuned for more info. The tracklist for Laced is below. Tracklist for Laced: 01. Pufff Day 02. Time Of Day 03. French Countryside 04. Laced 05. Tropical Vision 06. I Hate The Beach 07. Another Side 08. Revolution Wavers 09. Dead On Arrival 10. Automatic Writing 11. Making Out |

From their newsletter.
Live Shows We don't have anything outside of tomorrow night's Columbus show booked, but watch this space, as we should have more shows to announce very soon. We'll be booking a bunch of US shows around the album launch and fans on the other side of the pond should be able to check out shows there soon, as Matt is coming over to the UK for two weeks in late April / early May, where he'll be doing a bunch of promo for the record, playing a handful of solo shows, and no doubt generally causing mischief. There will be a full UK / European tour later in the year. As ever, if anyone is interested in putting us on, do get in touch. |

Currently existing as the duo of Matt Horseshit (vocals / guitars / drum programming / harmonica / keyboards) and Ryan Jewell (drums / percussion / keyboards), 'Laced' also features a guest appearance by Times New Viking's Beth Murphy, who sings on 'DOA'. Created in Columbus throughout 2010, the album was recorded in a variety of basements, practice spaces, living rooms, and bathrooms using almost no amplifiers and a beat up 70's Teac reel to reel. No longer mining corrosive, lo-fi dysfunctionality in 2-minute adrenaline hits, 'Laced' is the first record to see them consistently stretching things out and breaking new ground. Losing the caked-in distortion and aggression, whilst retaining a drugged density and adventurousness, it is cleaner and far more electronic.

Guitar, keyboards and drums remain staple instruments, but the driving bass guitar is ditched as samplers and electronics become increasingly central. Matt sampled, chopped and re-sequenced sections of Jewell's druming, forming a series of piled-up rhythms and loops. With this foregrounding of both rhythm and a spiralling mass of processed tones / melodies, 'Laced' could pass as a very a fried, psychedelic dance record. Numerous tracks bring to mind the early '90s indie-dance axis of MBV's 'Loveless' / Happy Mondays' 'Pills...' / Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica'. Squelchy, fluid and immersive, its huge blown-out swathes of blissfully reverberant FX, buried voices, smeared electronics and melted-out guitar processing recall the likes of Black Dice, Growing and Animal Collective. The pitchbent synth opening the 8-minute long I Hate The Beach' replicates Omar Souleyman's Syrian horns; Another Sides harmonica and acoustic guitar nods towards Dylan; whilst the frequent blissed-out frequency mess summons the spirit of Astral Social Club. There are blissfully shimmering loop-sections; places where the whole buckles in on itself. At the centre of the slurred, swirling chaos is Matts gnarly, nasal vocal.

VV: But your music has a lot in common with Dick Dale, and you’ve cited the Beach Boys as an influence. How big of an influence is surf rock?
WAVVES: Musically, …the Beach Boys… I’m sorry, I don’t understand the question. I’m really high right now. |

I was wondering what Matt Whitehurst and Rich Johnston are up to these days. Apparently Matt Whitehurst occasionally does sound for Royal Trux and Rich Johnston is a magician and also plays drums for Tommy Jay's Latest Freakshow and Pink Reason.

I really regret not going to their last show in London. They were a band that i thought would be around for longer.

I went to the gig they, or him, as it was only Matt and a bunch of electronic machines, played at the Shacklewell's Arms. I'm not sure it was the last gig PH played in London, though. I think he played one more that I couldn't go to.
Some more bands I wonder what happened to: Eat Skull, Blues Control and Times New Viking. |
