I don't quite understand how a band could "forget" how to play any of their own songs, but then again I don't use a bunch of crazy altered tunings (especially since my guitar's got a Floyd) nor have I been playing in a band for 29 years...

Take a song like, I don't know.. "Tunic". At this point, that song is 20 years old, and while they may have played it every night for about a year and a half, that's still two decades ago. Let's say somebody suggests that they relearn it, all four of them still have to agree that they want to play it again, and then go back and see if they actually remember how to play it. Given the wealth of material composed between now and then, the odd tunings, the fact that they haven't touched the song in 20 years and may not even remember it, and that some of them might not even like it anymore, it doesn't shock me that it's tough for them to choose 'old songs' to reintroduce into the set.

I imagine, but could be wrong, that all it takes is one member to veto a song to keep it from the sets. Or, alternately, one member from being able to play their part properly. I would be fascinated to sit in on an SY pre-tour rehearsal someday...watching them trying to remember "100%" at a soundcheck four years after they'd last played it was pretty eye-opening, and that's a pretty simple song.

Chris great job with the chronology - what do you make of how "Shadow of a Doubt" has become a centerpiece or culmination of these recent sets. I looked at the lists from 09 and it seemed it was played at about 25 % of the shows, but now it's like the song everybody talks about how awesome it was.

If I was to guess they found it to be well received when they did play it in 09 and they knew they had to have 4 or 5 old songs to round out the 2010 tours of the Eternal so they decided to make it a staple of their tours this year. If you look Shadow of a Doubt, The Sprawl, Cross the Breeze, and Death Valley 69 where played just about every night on the Eternal tour.
Kim's vocals for Shadow certainly don't hurt it's popularity.

"Shadow" was actually my least favorite part of the show on Saturday.
I've seen it so goddamn many times, and yeah Kim is fantastic, but it
doesn't jolt my system like the Daydream songs, or "White Kross" or
"Drunken Butterfly." I've seen that one over 20 times and I wish they'd
bring it back. Talk about Kim on fire.

listening to tunic on the headphones it struck me how it is such a FAST song musically and amped noisy supa noisy yet the vocals are so blase' and mellow resigned (to match the theme of the lyrics) that I always forget the song is a fucking RAGER.

I have never heard Nevermind (what was it anyway?) live

I would love to hear Anagrama,Diamond Sea and Karen Koltrane live. They've been play Sprawl and 'Cross the Breeze live the last couple of years. But I don't think it will ever happen. I'll keep going to shows because whatever they decide to play is always great live.

unfortunately there is a bunch that aren't ever gonna return, Cinderella's Big Score most glaringly as two band member don't like their parts on the songs, same with the Jet Set

Quoting an old ass reply here, but since it's been bumped I'm pretty interested in this. Cinderella's Big Score is one of my favorite songs, and this is just terrible "news." Who in the band doesn't like it?

Well, Kim isn't happy with her vocals on the album, and I think Lee doesn't like his guitar part.

I agree with you Jenn, Shadow is more of seat down in your seat kind of song while Drunken Butterfly makes you want to shake it. I wish they'd bring back Inhuman I've only seen them play it live once plus several recordings scattered around the Net and they always get crazy with it. Another one of my favorites that I've never seen them play is Theresa Sound World.
