yeah, that shogun kunitoki record is good, but it's also really different to all the other fonal stuff.

If you're in need of any information regarding the bands of our jolly good underground, please get in touch with the forum member Sun City Girl.

avarus are fucking excellent, they are what wooden wand and the vanishing voice wished they could be.
circle can be dull as hell, anyone else heard miljard? slumber fest!!! i'm glad i didn't get tricked into buying it, most of the other stuff i've heard by them is good though. |

I've had similar experiences as Savage Clone and T&B on this... I've never seen Kemialliset Ystavat (whom I consider to be the best of the "New Weird Finland" bunch) and I would like to see them, but most of the other Finnish bands that I've seen in 2006 didn't do much to me, definitely not in a positive way at least.
Paavoharjo being the worst of all... completely uninspired and looking terribly bored: plain awful. Kiila, Es, Islaja (same Fonal tour as Katy mentioned above) during an afternoon set in Amsterdam looked like they had just come out of bed. A lacklustre performance and a total fuck-it mentality... no mindfucks I'm affraid, worst gig of 2006. I recently heard some stuff by Es again and I did enjoy that, but I don't necessarily have to see them live again. Ever. Tomutonttu, if I was very harsh I'd say he was disappointing too, but to be fair he did have some technical problems and a really short set, so I'll refrain from judgement. Avarus were ok-ish... not great and not as good as some of their recorded stuff I've heard, but a lot better than the rest. Shogun Kunitoki - again I'll refrain from judgement because I only caught a few minutes of their set (at some festival) after being a bit turned off by the other Finnish bands I'd seen before. I'm not slagging off the entire Finland scene and I still enjoy some of these bands on records, but I don't really care much anymore about seeing any of these live. I'd go see Kemialliset Ystavat if they played my town though. Also, they are indeed completely unrelated (except for being Finnish) but last month I thoroughly enjoyed Circle... They were completely awesome, even better than most of the things I've seen at ATP the weekend before. Lordi looked pretty sweet at the Eurovision Song Contest too. |

i'm out of here couple of days and you start talking about the "scene"... well, right now i'm tired and don't have much to add... the best of the lot is clearly kemialliset ystävät, and also tomutonttu, which is solo project of jan anderzen, but then again, jan anderzen is kemialliset ystävät... only there he usually have other people helping him too. i think he's also a member of puke eaters, who made that one excellent cdr on chocolate monk. i've heard rumors about a puke eaters vinyl but that probably haven't happened yet. avarus are great too and check out also frichara pacchu, it's a solo project of one of the guys in avarus, he has made 3 excellent tapes so far and there will be a 7" out on fonal soon.
islaja, lau nau and kuupuu are good too, they're 3 ladies who also have a band called hertta lussu ässä (there should be lp out on eclipse hopefully this year) and they all have been playing occasionally in avarus. as for paavoharju, their first lp is excellent, one of the best ever, but it's true that they're not quite as good live. and the best gig i've seen last year was by tomutonttu, it was totally amazing! someone mentioned liimanarina... they were the best band ever! |
