Robert Christgau has a section on his website called Xgau Sez, where he answers questions from his readers. Recently, one of them asked him whether he's "always monitoring the endless stream of archival concert releases and crate digs" (this after Christgau wrote that some artists "redefine their music in concert") by the likes of the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie... and Sonic Youth. Xgau's take on Battery Park: "The Sonic Youth I've been playing with pleasure for weeks. I believe the '00s were their live peak. Kim is incendiary."

STUMM433 - The Big Update

Hello

Once again, thank-you for your patience.

We’ve been working hard to finalise all the details on our STUMM433 box-set and we’re very pleased to let you know that it will be available to pre-order this Monday!

As a member of this mailing list, you’ll receive an email at 3pm BST on Monday 22nd July with full details of the box-set along with a pre-order link. This will go live at 4pm.

There wil be a CD version and a high priced and very limited (433 copies) vinyl version, so wanted to give you this heads up.

58 artists over 5 pieces of vinyl and CD, STUMM433 is a project very close to our hearts.

We’re excited to finally be able to share this with you.

Many thanks
Mute HQ

Do reissues/represses count in this thread? Anyway, this will do as a nice companion piece to the above STUMM433 release. Saw it on the Forced Exposure newsletter, I added the red highlighting:

Quote:
2019 repress. Sounds of Silence is an anthology of some of the most intriguing silent tracks in recording history and includes rare works, among others, by Andy Warhol, John Lennon, Maurice Lemaitre, Sly & The Family Stone, Robert Wyatt, John Denver, Whitehouse, Orbital, Crass, Ciccone Youth, Afrika Bambaataa and of course, Yves Klein. In their own quiet way, these silences speak volumes: they are performative, political, critical, abstract, poetic, cynical, technical, absurd. They can be intended as a memorial or a joke, a special offer, or something entirely undefined. The carefully-chosen silences of this anthology are intrinsically linked to the medium of reproduction itself and reveal its nude materiality. They expose their medium in all its facets and imperfections, including the effect of time and wear. At the most basic level, these silences are surfaces. And it is in their materiality that they distinguish themselves from the conceptual experiments of John Cage with "4'33". Since the 1950s, silence has found a place in the economic structure of the record industry and since then it would increasingly be appropriated by a vast array of artists in a vast array of contexts. Indeed, the silent tracks seem to know no boundaries. The LP presents the silences as they were originally recorded, preserving any imperfection that the hardware conferred upon the enterprise, without banning the possibility of being satisfying to the ear. The liner notes provide historical background for each track, revealing the stated (or presumed) motivations for these silences, while providing novel sound correspondences or interferences. This album is meant to be played loud (or not), at any time, in any place: a true aural experience. Gatefold, iconic sleeve.

From Lee's site:

Quote:
***NEW ALBUM “NAMES OF NORTH END WOMEN” COMING NOV 2019*** – stay tuned for details-

would this be the "Lee Ranaldo/Raul Referee -"electronics-heavy” duo album" as mentioned on the first post on this thread, or is this something else?
to answer my own question: it is, and there will be a Europe/UK tour in March until May 2020. However on that page the music is described as follows:
Quote:
"Ranaldo and Refree strike out in an entirely new experimental direction, combining acoustic instruments with electronic beats and samples to create a new form of ‘electronic folk’ music, minimalist landscapes of music and vocals unlike anything either of them have done before. Relying on arrangements both simple yet complex (and with very little electric guitar) the duo enter into exciting new territory with this release."

to add to the mystery, there is also this FB post
and does anyone know the password? Tease me Lee

Fucking hell, knew I should've tried to make it over. Clear wax is pretty. Had a scan through the rest of the pics you've got on your Facebook - you've got a copy of Hassle Fest as well? That's just cheating man.

So it turns out that the vinyl edition of Michael Rother's Solo box set (I posted about it back in February) includes a performance of "Drone Schlager" by what would become Hallogallo 2010. It's on the "Live & Remixes" disc - I think the credits read, "Composed, produced and performed live by Michael Rother (guitar & electronics), Steve Shelley (drums) and Aaron Mullan (bass guitar) at Sonic Youth studio in Hoboken (USA) on 23rd September 2008. Mixed and edited by Aaron Mullan."
