good call man. i did a thesis on the impressionists this year for my history of composed music class this year. i really got into debussy's stuff. 'preludes' is one of the most minimally beautiful pieces ever composed.

Terry Riley's "Persian Surgery Dervishes" is pretty far out, man. Lots of people like that......but not me, I'm afraid (too much hippy noodling for my liking). Still, if you've not heard it, it's still worth checking out.

If we're talking Riley then his 1971 album with John Cale, "Church Of Anthrax", is absolutely incredible. I mean really, like one of my favourites. It runs the gamut from cyclical organ and piano jams to beautiful floating multi-tracked soprano sax improvisations and a lot in between, but it’s actually all surprisingly accessible. Pretty damn dreamy in places too, so even if it’s not quite in the whole shoegazey/guitar vein of a lot of the other recommendations in this list, I heartily suggest that you make sure to put that on your list Derek. And anyone else really. It’s awesome.

I really need to check out Pocahaunted. If it's as good as, say, Grouper, it's gonna be a win. Any particular album recommendations?

I forgot I made this thread.
Anyway, I've been listening to A LOT of lovesliescrushing and I must say that they're on my way to becoming one of my favourite bands. Their music draws me in and puts me in a daze in such an unexplainable way. My favourite album so far has been Bloweyelashwish though the other ones I've heard have been superb. It's really weird to think that the way this guy makes this music is so simple (he records this stuff on a 4 TRACK TAPE RECORDER) but yet it sounds so full and rich in sound. Perfect band. And I've yet to check out Tim Hecker which I'm going to do soon. |
