Instead of listening to the Eternal, I'm going to spend the time I've saved discussing not buying it on the internet.
Takes all sorts, I suppose... |

You know, there's one thing that's bothering on this whole "let's bash The Eternal and SY" thing. I used to be into Dream Theater a lot (don't laugh now :P) and I thought they totally rocked (and they did!). The thing is, there came a moment when an album came out that simply didn't seem right, you know? It wasn't THEM, it was some crap they recorded on short notice just to make the easy buck while they were riding the popularity wave. As a popular guy that I am, I made it noticed on the DT board. And I got promptly banned from the board for stating that the album was crap and that they were milking the fans with "deluxe", "gold" and "platinum" packages for the concerts (they included a ticket to the front rows and some other "goodies", like taking a photo with the band and meeting the band, you know, stuff that rocks when happens on its own, not when you have to PAY for it).
Bottom line here, The Eternal is a damn good SY record, it has a bit for all tastes, rough like the earlier stuff and soft like Rather Ripped, mostly. They're giving us their best by putting out an album recorded 2 years after the last one (there was time enough to settle down and compose new stuff without any kind of rush), and an album that has some of the most beautiful packaging I've seen, something that I can't stress enough, the cover is a fucking work of art, not some crap like this: So guys, think twice when you bash The Eternal (I remember that as soon as the TITLE of the album came out, some people started bashing right away), they really don't deserve that hate. |

Me too. I put in CIS last week and it was probably the last thing I listened to of them other than Nurse, Ripped, and the Eternal but I gave each of them only a few tries. I post here because there are people who share music tastes with me that no one I know in real life does. And because Drone is so foxxy.

Well, I didn't actually bash The Eternal, or Sonic Youth for that matter.
I guess I asked the question in a wrong and awkward way. The question/thread itself is no more stupid, or a 'betrayal' of the band and the fans on this board than the 'What do you think of The Eternal' threads, with polls where you can give the album a mark ranging from 1 to 10 (being one of the worst things, along with star ratings systems, to emerge from music journalism). If you're a member of the board and you can't give the album 1/10 without being a traitor and getting bad rep, what's the point in there being that option in the first place? You know how sometimes you hook up with an old friend you haven't seen for a few years, and you realize how you don't have so much in common anymore? Your friend hasn't become a bad person or whatever, but you just don't have much to say to each other. I makes you sad, even if it's no one's fault, and you understand whats going on. Sonic Youth changed my life. I've been buying their records on the day of their release ever since Experimental Jet Set. Recently however, I've not enjoyed their albums so much, Ripped and Nurse to be specific. They've been good enough albums (if I were to criticize them on one specific area, I'd say I feel that the production values on those records don't suit SY's music too well), but they haven't moved me in the same way as the previous releases have. Listening to The Eternal has led me to the same, personal conclusion. It's not a bad album, but I haven't felt like buying so far, and for the first time ever, I'm not sure if I will. It's a sad feeling, but somehow I guess I've lost touch with what the band have been doing these past few years. So yeah, I didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just wondering if there were other people on the board feeling the same way. |
