it took me a very, very long time to get it right, and i suspect this "great gig" business will take even longer.
i will be sure to look for that patty waters LP, by the way.

melly:
this is mostly for you it's just a small sample though, only about ten seconds this could be well embarrassing but this was the part i had the least trouble with http://www.yousendit.com/download/TT...V3JTSUR2Wmc9PQ

No, not embarrassing at all. A very good shot at it - well done. I hear what you mean now about hitting the high notes. Yeah, keep on practising, and you'll get there, girl. Can't wait to hear the full version when you're ready.

i think i can't hit the high notes because i smoke too much, which is problematic (and what any scratchiness there comes from)
the lower notes i have very little difficulty with, but if i try and sing in too high a register my voice literally cuts out completely.

Ooh, I dunno, Siouxsie Sioux smoked like a trooper when she was making "The Scream", and she hits some pretty good high notes on that (I'm thinking of, ironically, "Nicotine Stain"). I think with music in general, anyone worth their salt would be able to work with their "limitations" and come up with something even better. I get the idea that you're quite a taskmaster with yourself - if so, that's good, cos it means you can push yourself more and more. There's no point doing something in a half-assed way, is there?

well, of course i'm going to keep at it because i don't like to half ass things. i'd much rather not do something than half ass it. it's "all or nothing", if you like.
even if i never do get it right, that's okay though, because i can sing every other song on the album well enough. my voice is much more suited to, say, breathe in the air.

Yeah, exactly.
One thing that annoys me with some vocalists is that they're all technique but no bloody passion. Hearing someone go for it properly (like Claire Torry in "Great Gig"...) is what music is about for me (and you, of course!). Back to yerself, I was just thinking that "Great Gig" must be technically pretty damn hard to pull off - a lot of hitting different registers in quick succession - actually, come to think of it, like the vocal equivalent of John Coltrane in full melodic flow. Bloody hell, I'm even more impressed with you trying to sing "Great Gig" now, seriously.

that's my theory. just go for it, and if it doesn't work, rip it up and start again. and you can always tell if the passion for it isn't there.

You just summed up in one sentence what I've been trying to say. Checkmated again .
Listen, I have to go in a minute (have to do crap like housework and laundry), and also need to sort my life out to go out later on. It's been great chatting w/you, and yeah, do keep up with the practising. Have a great day in luvverleee France, take care of yerself, and say hello to yer other half ("Melly? Who the fuck calls themselves Melly?!" ).

Sorry Cantanky - I've tried 4 times now, and I keep getting an "Internal Error" message. . Will keep trying, as I do want to hear how you've progressed.

You've inspired me to put some of my crappy efforts onto MySpace. I'll sort it out later on today, and send you a link, so you can a good laugh at my, er, talent (ahem...)
