Favourite Team: Chile. Ive met a Chilean friend in the last year and he's been well excited about them, and rightly so, theyve been great value.
Most Annoying Team: Portugal Most Disappointing Team: England Surprise Team: Chile, I didnt know enough about them Favourite Player: Coentrao of Portugal, a diamond in the rough Most Annoying Player: Lucio for being such a diving bastard whilst also being the best defender ive watched play at that level Most Disappointing Player: Rooney, of course Favourite Moment: Slovakia beating Italy, and Villa's brilliant goal where he beat 3 defenders Worst Moment: Lampards goal being disallowed Most Controversial Moment: Kaka being sent off (If he hadnt have been, he might have played in the next group game against Portugal, and Ivory coast might have got through... maybe not, but it was still controversial) [/quote]

I read a letter to the editor in LA TIMES really pissed me off bout the world cup..
some dumb asshole wrote in how pissed off he was that Mexicans in the US were supporting the Mexican team in the Cup, when they should be supporting the US.. then went into some dimwitted tirade about how Mexicans should assimilate better, how they are unAmerican and how this World Cup match demonstrates that shit.. but news flash! hey asshole, have you even been watching the Cup or talking to Mexicans on the street about it? Surprisingly, the Mexicans I talk to, ESPECIALLY those who speak no english and would hardly want to assimilate into mainstream american culture (shit who would want to?) are MAD NUTS about the US team, were giving MAD support to the US team, watched ALL the US matches with enthusiasm, and honestly seemed to be supporting the US team MORE than the mexican team, probably because the US team had far more relative success than the Mexican team did.. I hate assholes who don't know shit, and bring up old gripe just for the sake of hearing themselves speak.. I mean shit, that was just using the Cup as a lame excuse to go on a racist tirade.. Mexicans were fully into the US team, just like many of us Americans were mad into the Mexican team, they were mutual home teams!

Haha, seriously, they play that show on UK tv at least once a month, usually at about two in the morning, and I always end up watching it. Crouch is a genuinelly funny bloke i think, perfect comic timing. My favourite Crouch quote came when asked once what he'd be if he wasn't a footballer, to which he replied, "a virgin". Brillant! |

Yeah, he's about the only English player with anything even approaching a sense of humour. Brazil-Netherlands. I'm predicting a Brazil win ... predictably. But if any team in this tournament seem set up to beat Brazil, I'd say it's Holland. Can't wait to watch it regardless of the result. |

Same here. It's the fist time this tournament that I've been really nervous ahead of the game. I feel the tournament only just starts here, but at the same time there's a good chance it could be all-over in a few hours. It wouldn't surprise me if it'll be a very disappointing defensive game. With both teams being really fast on the break, whoever scores first is going to have a huge advantage. Actually, I think Greece are the only team this tournament who have come back from being 0-1 down to end up winning the game (playing against a 10-man Nigeria). Neither Brazil or Holland have gone behind yet, it will be really interesting to see either team chasing the game. I'd give it a 60-40 chance for Brazil, but I still think Holland d have a chance if everyone's giving it all and if players like Sneijder and Robben can stand up today. Lots of questions about the Dutch defence. Van der Wiel is completely inexperienced at this level, while Van Bronckhorst (35 years old and retires from football after this tournament) is slow nowadays and never makes the defensive action on the ball, always just runs backwards. Maicon could kill him, unless De Jong/Mathijssen is going to cover for him. Or maybe we'll see Kuyt running up and down the pitch chasing Maicon. On the other side Bastos isn't really that good defensive-wise and he'll be playing against Robben. He'll surely will get help too, they'll probably double mark him and I wouldn't be surprised if Felipe Melo kicks him continuously. I'm off to the pub. Hup Holland Hup. edit: oh shit, mathijssen injured 40 minutes before kick-off? then we're fucked. all the defensive subs (ooijer, boulahrouz, braafheid) have been benched at their club all season. shit, i have a bad feeling now. |

I now have a dilemma. I like Brasil, but not really their team this year. On the other hand, I've never really cared for Dutch team but I'd like to say after the world cup's over that we've lost to the World Champions.
So now, I don't know who to cross fingers for. But since pokkeherrie is a nice and friendly kokot, i'd rather go for the Oranjes.

Yeah, I have a similar conflict. I've always liked the Dutch team, and Pokkeherrie is clearly a top bloke, but Maicon is maybe my favourite player in the world right now and I can't help getting a hard-on when he starts making one of his runs. For me I want Maicon to score but Holland to win (which right now looks unlikely, atleast in terms of the latter.)
Robben is particularly frustrating. He's overplaying, trying to fire off the perfect shot and getting caught, rather than shooting early. God knows what Holland do though, if they start pressing forward Maicon is gonna slaughter them on the break. |
