word. And I wasn't coming at you - just more curious how much Three 6 you've heard while making these statements. I've been in a huge Three 6 phase lately tho. Besides The End, bumping Mystic Stylez, Unbreakables, Most Unkown Hits, Smoked Out Loc'ed Out + chopped n screwed disc... I think a lot of stuff I love now (A$AP Mob!) has its roots firmly in Three 6 (...or maybe Three 6 mashed w/ Bone Thugs?).

Wait, Three Six Mafia screamed "one-hit wonder" at the time of their first album? Meaning Mystic Stylez, the punishing, grimy, violent independent hardcore rap album from 1995?
I love that album, but I can't imagine it spawning anything resembling an actual hit. I wasn't into them, or any rap that wasn't from the 5 Burroughs back when the album was first released, so maybe I'm fuzzy on the detail. But... Jesus, please help me understand how that record produced a hit! Fast forward a decade and yeah, they had some hits. Not to mention an Oscar win, which is even more impressive than Trent Reznor's. I too love the End. Gotta be my favorite album by Three 6 as well. Gotta love UGK and Juicy J killin' it on ALLA. |

I'm not being snarky, I really didn't know! I told you man, I was not into that kind of rap in '95, so I have no idea one way or another. |

listening to Shabazz Palaces. how cool is it that Ishmael from Digable Planets still remains a top notch artist 20 years later?

Dude, I know! I was all over Lese Majesty for a bit in 2014. Thought it might be a contender, at least for my top 10. But I overdid it. Nobody else here was really into it and I lost interest after a while. I don't think I played it at all for the last few months of the year. They are good though. In their adopted home of Seattle, WA, they're just friggin huge. I do sometimes get a bit irritated when people go on and on about how original they are. They definitely are extremely talented, and their records defy categorization, but I hear a lot of Anti-Pop Consortium influence in their music. And APC is an excellent and groundbreaking hip-hop group that has been overlooked and underrated by US audiences for the entirety of their career. |

i'll be honest, Lese Majesty doesn't do much for me yet.
Black Up is a classic though, up there with the best rap albums i've heard from this decade. |

Hell yeah! After hearing Count Bass D's guest verses on Mm.. Food??, I dug into this album and really fucking loved it. I would call it a classic, but it's kind of a relic from my backpacker era. I never expected anyone in the café to share my appreciation for it. Another album that's like that is Beauty and the Beat by Edan. Really incredible, at the time it was probably my favorite hip-hop record. But Edan faded into obscurity and kinda stopped making music for some reason, which is sad. But anyone who's interested in trippy psychedelic genius level hip-hop should certainly spend some time listening to Edan's first two records. |

Ok, Rocky's totally delivering a Kanye flow on "Back Home," especially the first verse. Seriously. Sounds good, like a trap Late Reg. cut.

How much do you guys think Niki Minaj gets paid for throw-away, phone-it-in (literally) "contributions" to shitty songs like this one?

Jesus. All the ranting that people make about rap being shit because of this and that is summed up right there in that song. And with that, I feel it makes it harder for people like Kendrick, Pharohe Monch etc. to get taken seriously and show that rap can be a force for good (cringe) and actually have a lot of interesting things to say.
