ha ha. i love tempeh sauteed with vegetables (red peppers, julienned carrots, etc) & a bowl of brown rice. it has a bit of a dry sticky texture but it's not bad at all for me. ha hah.

btw i had a good recipe for tofu, but it was lost in one of the neurons that alcohol killed. it's indonesian. goes more or less like this:

heat up some sesame oil
add brown sugar, ginger, soy sauce
cook the tofu in it.

well i'd fry the tofu first. i think that's how it went. add the ginger last. any indonesians out there that could clarify? crispy brown delicious cubes of flavor.

its true to say that there are some pretty gross meat subs out there but sainsburys soy hot dogs are lovely, as are coldron(?) lincolnshire sausages. i think they do a whole line of things and the burgers are fantastic, really thick and suprisingly low in fat etc. i dont really eat burgers and stuff normally but when i do its always those ones.

Um, vegetarians...where to begin?

Vegetarians have a great basic point. Humans are not designed to eat as much meat as the average person does.
According to the American Dietetic Association, meat-eaters have an increased risk of heart disease, colon cancer, obesity, adult-onset diabetes, gout, osteoporosis, kidney stones, gallstones, diverticular disease, lung cancer and breast cancer.

Strict vegetarians, however, despite their claims that a vegan diet increases energy and stamina, seem to often suffer from an illness that has been termed chronic fatigue syndrome. At least half of those that I have ever known have problems that disrupt their daily lives because of this "illness". Savage Clone seems to have no problem as evidenced in his post, but so many people that I know (in real life) do. Does anyone remember the SNL news story about Vegetarians in the fictional "So Very Weak" magazine? haha
It all depends on your body's chemistry & metabolism I suppose.

I have also noticed that people that I know that simply do not eat right & eat lots of processed or junk food suffer from the same ailment.

Have some fish. Enjoy meat every now & then. Your body needs some robust mitochondria doing their thing at the cellular level! Oh, but my body can't process meat, they say. Well, you have damaged yourself then by going overboard. There is most certainly such thing as too much of a good thing.
Although humans are truly more herbivorous than carnivorous, it is an established scientific fact that we have eyes on either side of our head for stereoscopic vision for the purpose of making tools & hunting & killing prey.

It's never all or nothing...no single issue is ever completely black or white...yet another cliche, but that particular truism happens to be the truth.

Yeah, and we have canine teeth.
We also have an appendix, which probably once served some purpose but which we also no longer need.

I have always thought fish was disgusting in any case.

Hey, look! I can get up early in the morning and go for a hard bike ride!
Wow.
I do love how you can offer a seemingly balanced point of view and still come across as totally sanctimonious. How do you do that?

I thought about the canines too, (I really did) but veg-warriors have good evidence to back up their position that they are not "extended" canines designed specifically for ripping & chewing, so I went with the eyes thing.

Today I had a smoked chicken (from the deli) sandwich on 9 grain Cobblestone Mills bread with fresh tomato slices & lettuce (just iceberg), brown mustard & a slice of sharp cheddar. To drink: ozonated mineral spring water from my water cooler.

Digestion music: Pylon The Palladium NYC '88

Tonight I'm thinking I'll have some pan-fried (no batter, just Fleischman's olive oil margarine) salmon or Thai shrimp with some rice & a little soy sauce & a salad with creamy balsamic vinaigrette to start.

I was a vegetarian for a while (about 4-5 years). I was a vegan for a while (less than a year). I am just more health aware now. If I eat meat I try to eat free range meats without hormones, but I can't deny an occasional burger from a fast food joint, which I am sure is not free range. I make it a point to not think negative thoughts when I eat; attitude is one of the biggest health destroyers, and it really does help to not overendulge in any one thing. Its all about balance. Eatting a steak is great, but the ruffage (ie. lettuce, spinach, greens) help it to pass through the colon properly. Red meat can settle in the colon for years, (this is a fact). We are what we eat, cliche, I know, but it is true.

f.

How exactly are you sure that that would happen? How do you know an alien civilization wouldn't eat meat?

I guess that explains our hatred for natural carnivores, lions and tigers and whatnot.

But what kind of drives me nuts is that people make such a big deal about not killing animals and their ethical treatment. But, if you have watched any nature shows, you would realize that in the wild, animals treat eachother just as unethically as we treat them.

Take for example, the leopard seal. It is a known fact that once it grabs a penguin, it shakes it until the penguins has been turned (almost) inside out ,probably while the penguin is still alive. Killer whales are known to toss captured seals back and forth, as if they are playing a game of catch. A lot of wasp species stun some insects (like caterpillars) and lay their eggs inside them., and after awhile, that insect will be slowly eaten alive. Boa constrictors suffocate their prey (if a person did that to an animal, it would be considered evil).

Seeing how these things always happen in the natural world, how is it not natural and unethical for humans to kill and eat animals? How is it that if an animal kills another for food, it is considered natural, but if a human does it, it's unethical? Why do you think we have canines in the first place? Because our ancestors ate meat. The first technology we invented were weapons to kill other animals. Could our world have turned out the same if we were always vegetarians?

PS. this is coming from a man who has always been interested in and loved animals, I just never agreed to vegetarianism for some reason

News flash:
Most vegetarians don't care what you eat.
I sure don't.
Evangelism sucks, whether religious, dietary or political.
I never ask meat eaters to justify themselves, and yet I am called upon to defend vegetarianism and vegetarians al the damn time.

Do you need a justification? I don't know.

Personally, I can't think of a good reason. I recently read an article by Roger Scruton about why people are vegetarians. Had to do with the lack of piety surrounding meat-eating in the modern world. People no longer say thanks to the animal (like Native Americans in the movies) after killing them. People no longer engage in the kind of community rituals (even just sittinng around the table with family) that used to surround meat-eating. They just stuff Big Macs down their gullet while sitting alone in their car. So, vegetarians are supplanting artificial restrictions in order to satisfy this urge for reverence. Is this bullshit? Makes more sense to me than, "I just don't like the taste of meat."

Thoughts?

i say thanks to the damn chicken. and cow. i fucking kiss the sacrifice when i unwrap it and it's a lovely cut: a tender lambchop. you bet your ass. eroticism & reverence. and i hate macdonalds-- pig vomit food.

roger scruton!! he's a philospher of music, isn't he? i read his book and i think it's a crock.

no actually i just don't share his phenomenological approach. but i'm not a pro. not at this anyway
