Keith Wood, along with constant foil Leon Dufficy, is Hush Arbors, and while his self-titled Ecstatic Peace! debut is not his first album by any means - he's been at this almost ten years - it does provide the perfect introductory point to Hush Arbor's distinctive take on psych folk. Combining the pensive songwriting of John Phillips circa Wolfking, the plaintive honesty of Neil Young, and the fishtank-gazing cacophony of Six Organs of Admittance (Wood is a frequent collaborator), Wood writes classic-sounding songs that sound readymade for AM radio, circa 1968.

These songs would play as comfortably over a scene from The Wonder Years as they would piping from a noxious chillout tent at Terrastock. There are songs here that resonate with the minor key melancholy of Bert Jansch or perhaps even Mark Kozelek, while others hint at a Wire subscriber's Siamese Dream, all propulsive rhythms and lysergic electric guitar.

Some albums are 'growers' - not this one. While repeated listens reveal more and more details, as good albums should, this is also an album that commands immediate attention. Try to put it on in a crowded room - just try. You'll have a 'High-Fidelity-Beta-Band' scene on your hands within two minutes.

"Sounds like somebody spiked Buck Owens' whisky with some double dipped acid"-NME
"(Keith) Wood takes the bare bones of Americana and makes something personal and timeless.
" - Daniel Spicer, The Wire

JUDY TENUTA JOINS THURSTON MOORE, SUNN O))), RHYS CHATHAM AND MOBY ON STAGE FOR IMPROV BLOWOUT!!

October 31st, 2008 at 11:33 am by Memphis Meateater

To celebrate her new solo album of accordion improvisations on Ecstatic Peace, Judy Tenuta will be joined onstage by Rhys Chatham, Thurston Moore, Moby, and Sunn o))). With this release, titled Impaled Lesbetarian Inquisition, Tenuta uses only vocals, the venerable accordion, and a table of effects to give the listener a brutal tour through her tortured mind. To satisfy older fans, the track “Blood Carpet” features a screamed (but verbatim) re-telling of her Women of the Night (HBO, 1988) set.

Andrew WK takes party to the piano

06:05 PM PT, Oct 31 2008

What's party man Andrew WK been up to these days? Besides preaching positivity as a motivational speaker at Yale, Carnegie Mellon and NYU? The Santo's Partyhouse co-owner is gearing up to record an improv piano record in November, to be released on good friend Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label. He performed a solo piano show last month (pictured above) at New York's the Stone, at the request of Foetus' Jim Thirwell.
"The piano is how I first came into music," he told Pop & Hiss in an interview today. "The approach to recording will be all spontaneous, all improv. It'll be called '55 Cadillac, named for this '55 Cadillac limo I bought, the only car I ever owned in New York. It was first bought by Dean Atchison, the secretary of State during the McCarthy era, so it's a haunted car as well. It's had a lot of intense experiences. All of that will be going into the album."
The album artwork will also feature Mr. WK posing with the behemoth. His sizable fanbase in Japan are sure to eat this up; WK had the most popular ringtone recently when he created a rock version of a popular comedian's catchphrase. Now he's working on a whole "album" of ring tones, translating J-Pop hits into Andrew WK rock missiles.
Our rowdy but deep-minded friend will also be appearing in L.A. for the opening night of Paper Magazine's fourth annual Los Angeles project on Nov. 5, in a one-night recreation of the anything-goes vibe of Santo's. We'll get a taste of his motivational mojo then: "I just want to harness the energy. I'm there to remind us all that we are alive and that it's time to celebrate."

EP Artist Update, Hush Arbors and Religious Knives, Election Wrap up
The future is bright as Religious Knives and Hush Arbors hit college radio and other EP artists prepare for 2009

ECSTATIC PEACE ARTIST UPDATE

2009 is looking to be another monumental year with a slew of new releases from Ecstatic Peace. Jemina Pearl, after spending some time in the studio working with Thurston on "Sheena is a Punk Rocker", is working hard on a new album collaborating with a bicoastal band of great folks old and new that should produce a ripper for 09 with many days of touring to follow. Thurston, at present working hard with SY on the forthcoming Matador release, will also find his way onto the EP release schedule in collaboration with Bill Nace as Northampton Wools and in other transmodular forms. The Sunburned tribe followed Kieran Hebden(Four Tet) up to the woods of Vermont on a vision quest to destroy angles for 3 straight days and we're now anxiously awaiting what Chief Hebden will come up with for a mix. Should be a mind bomb. The band with best band member name ever - LUKE CRANKER- is Servile Sect and the impact that their Stratospheric Passenger CD had on us was more than a flesh wound. We're super stoked to drop this as LP WAX for you in the next month. More killzone vinyl coming from Mouthus, Menstruation Sisters, Flaherty + Nace, Mutant Ape, Macronympha, Richard Ramirez + M.S.B R.,Hat City Intuitive, New Blockaders, Jason Crumer + Roxann Spihula, Samara Lubelski, Aaron Dilloway, Rat Bastard, Uneven Universe, Prurient + T. Moore, and Leslie Keffer. To name a few...

Little Claw has the tracks and is also in mix mode fresh off a successful tour so we're hoping to deliver this in the first half of 09 as well. Matt Krefting has crafted a surgical strike of a cover record with the help of some deeply formed friends of the music(mascis, sunburned, burkett, townsend, etc). Vibe'a plenty. We were honored that Andrew W. K. was willing to stake his November out to create an epic solo piano recording for the label. Lord knows where this will take the man of endless inspiration but we're pretty sure it's not gonna sound like George Winston. Fall is going to bring us new sounds from the endless tour known as Awesome Color as well as the envelope pushin MV+EE. Both of which are in writtin mode movin into recordin mode. Wooden Wand will also have a record ready for us in the form of a Ryko granted exceptioned "Hard Knox." A favorite in the kitchen for months, this collection of pre studio breath takers displays Toth's best side. And Hamp locals Lord Jeff are in the process of stealing Justin away from his Dino days to make a record of sweet seventies slo farm. Should slide you through those summer months nicely. Oh yeah, and we just signed ENTRANCE straight outta Laurel Canyon - an explosive 3-piece that features predatory bass lines, teeth gnashing skins, and slippery yngwie-jorma-dickie guitar squallmaster Guy Blakeslee.

REVIEWS

Mojo(Underground Album of the Month): "Wood's feathery tones and bejewelled axe illuminate a tuneful bouquet of styles ranging from the electric raga swing of Gone to Bless You's haunting vox' n' loops lattice."

NME: "Sounds like somebody spiked Buck Owens' whisky with some double dipped acid"

NME: "Like a spontaneous French tonguing on a night bus, Virginian Keith Wood's latest offering as Hush Arbors strikes from nowhere, stunning us with its grin-spreading ace-ness...'Hush Arbors' brims with the vitality of a man still in love with music."

The Wire: "(Keith) Wood takes the bare bones of Americana and makes something personal and timeless."

Aesthetica : "This album has something extremely special about it...You feel like you've been let in on a greaat secret but its worth sharing so, so go, get up now, and get it."

The Decibel Tolls: "In short, Keith Wood just dropped the type of album that separates the men from the boys....Fuck Chinese Democracy, this is Hush Arbors' time, as far as I'm concerned."

Pop Matters: "Every track feels suffused with organic energy, the glow of natural light, the green haze of leafy vistas, the bright optimism of sunny days...This very fine album takes you into the light, points out the lovely view, and encourages you to stay a while. You couldn't ask for a better break from the world."

New Noise: "Hush Arbor's psyche-folk is a wondrous fusion of subdued raunch and delicate beauty sometimes all at the same time."

Dusted: "Some of the thin, drilling guitar tones are redolent of direct-to-4-track overload, a nice reminder that Wood's heart still lies with home tapers and bedroom maniacs."

Prefix: "This time Wood matches the screaming guitars with some screams of his own, allowing his vocals to break from the cerebral tones that inform much of his music and letting the album peak with clattering force."

AU: " Eight songs of exquisite poise, delivered with a truckload of retro-panache."

Weekly Dig: "Hush Arbors makes music just this side of fucked up, and if it found its way into a talented youngster's backpack, it could help change the world."

Religious Knives The Door
RELEASE DATE: 10/14/08

REVIEWS

Pitchfork: "The Door is still firmly in a field of its own, offering six tracks that are equal in barbed psychedelic power yet compliment one another in such a way that this album-- although brief by the clock-- feels substantial, fully-realized, and bizarrely anthemic."

Baltimore City Paper: "...guitars glower at one another, drumsticks collide then whack the skins--and even when these elements eventually break into a series of repetitious slam dances, there's more of a Big Ben-tolling impression than a sense of cataclysmic resolution....By the end of The Door, Religious Knives have earned their juice"

The Decibel Tolls: "Religious Knives whisk you away on a very gnarly (in a good way) magical mystery tour."

Dusted: "Miller's vocals are attitude perfect - imagine defrocked nuns heading up a girl group, all full of 'psychic trash'......The Door's hitting me real good as a key example of how to convincingly rock without embarrassing yourself, or your audience, in the process."

Prefix Magazine: "These noises swell and change organically, like a force of nature, not an imposition of human rationality...All the foreboding darkness of the band's name rings out here. We seem to occupy some dark, disconnected, empty landscape. We seem to be in the throes of some post-apocalyptic cult."

SoundsXP: "'On A Drive' has an oppressive beauty, like the bruised cloud tones of gathering thunderheads, all grumbling and shadowy, while the psychedelic drone-rock of 'The Storm' is doomy and rumbling but oddly exhilarating. The album has only six tracks but each is a cracker, the compelling noise of a pop apocalypse."

I'll continue the conversation.

I think the new tall firs record that just came out was really good. I have yet to hear the hush arbors record. But i saw religious knives when they played in seattle. And they blew me away they were awesome. But, as for recorded output I don't know.

I want to know if anyone has any dirt or has listened to some of the releases from like 6 years ago. Like TAM i kept reading about that album and all its glory but i can't find it. Also there were those two albums put out by thurston's brother and his nephew. Along with that margaret de wyss album that was played on The Watt From Pedro Show and that sounded really cool.
