Just listened Metal Machine wholly first time in my life. I loved it totally (believe me or not but to me it was really great way to relax after hard work day)! I really liked also Sally Canīt Dance although it is very different comparing it to Metal Machine. I think SCD is almost as great as Transformer & Berlin. But at the moment Metal Machine is best solo Reed Iīve heard! Next Coney Island...

MJ, you are now ready to dig the, um, "organic" version of Metal Machine Music, if you haven't already: Lou Reed & Zeitkratzer - Metal Machine Music - 2002-03-20 Venice - reseed There's also an official CD+DVD set (not of this exact performance, of course), but a minty copy commands big bucks on the Interhole (God-DAMMIT am I sick of out-of-print releases...). Watch out for a solo for the ages by Lou on the third movement! If you can't download stuff via Dime, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Now, a couple of related questions for the board: 1.- A few years ago, Lee mentioned he'd written a piece for Zeitkratzer - does anybody know if this baby can be heard somewhere? 2.- Back to MMM, "on December 01 Zeitkratzer performed the final, so far unreleased part of Metal Machine Music in their Berlin concert as a tribute to Lou" - no recording has surfaced yet? Really? Crap!

Finally I have listened all his studio & live albums I found (I would really like to hear the Stone: Issue Three with Zorn & Anderson, but I couldnīt find it anywhere). I also listened Lulu & found it a lot better than when I heard it first time, but itīs not still one of my favourite Reed or Metallica records. I think there doesnīt exist bad Reed record. Even when heīs flirting with disco in the Bells or eighties pop in New Sensations and Mistreal, he manages a lot better than many others in same genre. Of course he has weak songs, but there are always also great songs in every album. My favourites at the moment are: Transformer, Berlin (both versions), Metal Machine Music (both versions), Street Hassle, Live-take no prisoners, the Blue Mask, New York, Songs For Drella, Set the Twilight Reeling, American Poet, Hudson River Wind Meditations & Creation of the Universe

It's an excellent record. Having said that, and as much as I like annihilating fuck-you free-jazz/improv sax, I would have preferred it if John Zorn had left more room for Lou's fantastic guitartronics work. When Zorn is flamethrowing all over the place he tends to drown Reed and especially Anderson out. But yes, if you dig Lou Reed (and if you don't... are you retarded or something?), GET IT.

Just listened the Raven second time (now expanded edition). Maybe itīs not one of his most greatest works, but anyway itīs really interesting! Must listen it many times, I think it will open even more. I think these are among the 20 best songs of him:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQki4_KdWcY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWHdHrqyAJ4 I think itīs really great Lou didnīt just do the records thatīs familiar to him in the end of his career. All his after 2000-production is less or more interesting. Also listened Metal Machine Music Again, itīs sooo great! |

Me too. I got PASS THROUGH FIRE: THE COLLECTED LYRICS which sent me back to records I hadn't ever heard or hadn't heard in a while. Most--all but three or four--suck. Actually, there's always at least one good song on every album. But there's a TON of shit. I think it's pretty sad that, like, BLUE MASK is considered a "good" one. It has about three good tunes on it. One wants to love Lou. He started VU. He followed the big hit TRANSFORMER with BERLIN, followed the big hit SALLY CAN'T DANCE with MMM. Who wouldn't want to love the guy? But he makes it very hard. Really, it wasn't until fucking 1989 that he finally released a really good one, NEW YORK, which based upon a recent re-listen strikes me as his greatest achievement. No bullshit, great lyrics, great guitars. He could've been doing this all along. I blame Bowie. |
