The interview (if you can call it that) lasted for almost 2 hours but was very informal. Anyway they offered me a job so i'm pleased to get of the job seekers alllowance!

I’m not sure if I ever replied to this, and can’t be bothered to look, but I pivoted from an accounting and business admin job to unemployment to freelance journalism to salary journalism to fucking “enemy of the people” journalism this decade.

Technically speaking, I’m a reporter and entertainment and features editor for a small town newspaper. But that newspaper is part of a bigger regional publishing company, so I do a lot of side shit like newsroom training, creating internship plans serving on the editorial board and being a pain in everyone’s ass.

I’m almost never not working and I make less than I did with the accounting gig, but I’m happier because I’m better at this than I was at that.

Still... probably time to move on soon.

I put a fuck-ton of time and effort into this is the thing.

As you know, Slambang, a mere 5 years ago it was either return to graduate school somehow or make fucking journalism work. I made it work through sheer force of will and sticktoitiveness, so it’s hard to really seriously consider changing things up again. But I’m on the lookout for journalism-adjacent jobs with better pay and bennies.

yes you’ve done well and deserve hearty congrats. however if you’re gonna be working 70 hours a day you might as well get paid for it so that you can take proper care of yourself and not succumb to stress disorders.

whenever you’re ready you gotta start moving to the next level in your career because otherwise you’ll start becoming the indispensible assistant. by which i mean, hierarchy climbers will use your conscientiousness to prop themselves up.

which, you know, it’s part and parcel of the game... but you have to have a surplus to invest in yourself so that you can propel yourself as well.

then again if you’ve reached a “comfortable” place where you can coast for a while it’s time to gather some “fuck you” money. but i don’t think you’re comfortable, correct? if you snap under strain, who will catch you?

gotta build yourself some backup structures for antifragility. i learned this the last recession! lol.

yes. in the meantime though it helps to cultivate an efficient lifestyle. simplify things, save money and time wherever you can (sometimes mutually exclusive sometimes mutually supportive)
