this debate was like all other debates, total nonsense. Debates are an antiquated 19th century publicity stunt and excuse to create press copy. In the 19th century debates and public speeches were just choreographed opportunities for press releases that could be published across the nation, especially after the Civil War and the advent of the telegraph.

Today it is essentially an anachronism, pointless and out of place. We don't need these staged events to get press copy and material. Indeed no one ever even "wins" these things, Trump supporters will come out of this feeling great like "see he totally stuck it to that lying bitch!" meanwhile all of the Democrats have been having a victory dance as if Overlord Hillary said anything substantial or uplifting last night.

She really didn't silence Trump or address the criticisms he threw at her, those Feel the Bern people who don't like her will certainly not like her any more now, probably somewhat less because Trump leveled the kinds of accusations that they agree with. Its not that they will support Trump so much as they will not be enthused to support Overlord Hillary.

I vote in 2020 we finally abandon meaningless 19th century political theater and do something that works?

i disagree with this, especially in the TV age. debates used to be reproduced in the newspaper in the XIX century, nowadays we can see for ourselves.

it's not really about who's prettier, it's about getting information about the candidates the same way that those who work with them do-- in "person".

sure, it's staged, but you can still glean a lot from visual information. how do they operate under pressure? do they huff and hyperventilate? do they hold up well when in a difficult spot? are they witty, or dense?

and then there's body language which is how we transmit 90% of what we say in real life.

we're wired to take in oodles more information from body language than we do from words alone-- and printed words are just abstractions. so we can learn from the candidates a lot more than they want to say.

see what? What did we see last night or last week that we haven't seen already, what did we learn that we didn't already know? Last night by every single definition of was a complete and dismal waste of time.

Again we have plenty of other opportunities for that. These debates are just a publicity stunt. Its what they ALWAYS have been across American history, they just are less necessary than ever now that we have so much other access to information, video, and other feedback from the candidates.

Its not that you're wrong its that we have so much other access to video of the candidates, so the debates tell us NOTHING new at all. What did we learn last night that we didn't already know? What did we learn about Mitt Romney or Obama that we didn't already know in 2012? What did we learn about John McCain or Obama that we didn't already know in 2008? What did we learn about Bush II or John Kerry that we didn't already know in 2004? What did we learn about Gore or Bush II in 2000 that we didn't already know??


Look I get it, you really like politics, but I also know you are smart enough to totally understand what I am saying here.

19th century politics is and will continue to be an anachronism in the 21st century. We don't need these events to get the press copy, and reading the news today reminds us all the more of just how antiquated this approach is! The newspapers and sites are just rehashing a bunch of dribble from last night. Now in 1876 we needed this information because there was little access otherwise, now? its a 24/7 newscycle with market saturation we don't need mindless political theater simply because its tradition

anyone who's anyone that can see crystal clear and not living with malfunctions saw this. it's not hard to intuitively see this with live TV. what is awesome was the cosmically comical cringeworthy nature of it all. the looks on Clinton's face, the vibes, the bullying, the megalomania completeness of Trumps lucky life, the laughter of other countries, the reminder of psycho passive - aggressive arguments between the sexes. history gold!!!

The presidential "debates" the US has been subjected to since 1976 aren't real debates like some of us studied and participated in at school. They're more like joint press conferences with professional wrestling-type arguing thrown in. I don't think Drumpf did anything other than play to his base, which is a useless gesture. They would vote for him if he literally rubbed shit in their faces. As for non-sound bite considerations, Clinton showed a command of the issues and in-depth knowledge of them. Drumpf, on the other hand, said that Russia is new to the nuclear game, that Russia, Syria and Iran would be great allies in fighting ISIS, ad naseum. All he can do is engage in insults, or, as he did last night, prepared insults. He is not only grossly immature and dangerous, he is profoundly ignorant. Anyone who votes for him, or insists that there is rough equivalency between Drumpf and HRC, has every right to feel stupid.

Not exactly sure what you're referring to--televised US presidential debates? I didn't say "since 1960" because even though that was the first one, there was a sixteen year gap until they became a permanent part of the landscape in 1976. And I've seen taped portions of the 1960 debate--Kennedy and Nixon acted more or less like adults. I didn't think Nixon had it in him.

If you mean US presidential debates in general, I think Lincoln's debates were of a much higher quality than the ones on television.

As for debates in general, a proper debate, where one side supports a premise and the other attacks it, can be very enlightening and bears no relationship to Andre The Giant threatening Hulk Hogan.
