Ok, here are a few:
-Kid A is one of the worst albums of the decade. -The Flaming Lips output has been more mediocre than good as a whole. And I consider myself a fan of the band. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is especially bad. - Slowdive > My Bloody Valentine - Most of the 'original' shoegaze bands sucked...like Chapterhouse, Lush, Cocteau Twins, Pale Saints, Galaxie 500, Ride (sans a few songs), etc. Which brings me to my next unpopular opinion that 4AD is arguably one of the worst of the independent record labels. - The Hold Steady are an inconsequential bar band with almost no discernible talent. - The new breed of indie/folk/slowcore songwriters like Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Bon Iver, and Iron & Wine are insufferable. They are all a bunch of half-rate Mark Kozelek wannabes. |

Will Oldham (aka Bonnie Prince Billy) has been around since the early 90's, he's not exactly "new"... check out Palace Music, he has some worthwhile stuff.

Compilations aside, Bad Brains and Black Flag both made just one really great album: I Against I and Damaged, respectively.

- Diamanda Galas is the greatest living American vocalist.
- Many American listeners of underground music actually have quite conservative taste. Their sometimes wholesale rejection of disco or electronic/dance music shows this. it's borderline fascistic. - Animal Collective isn't all that hot. Good at what they do, pioneering in SOME ways, but not always enjoyable to listen to. - Having chops/technical skill in today's climate of lazy DIY hordes is a benefit, not a detriment. - There IS such a thing as listening to too much music. Many of my friends do this, miss the nuance of a record, write a 1-sentence blurb on their blog about it, and move on. You can't really have a satisfying listening experience if you're frantically downloading every obscure noise release known to man on Soulseek and listening to them one after the other. - Not entirely relevant, but in my browsing I've noticed that 90% of the balding, geriatric record nerds over at the Goner and Terminal Boredom forums are genre-ghettofied fucks that keep listening to the same garage rock permutations and willfully ignore the more exciting elements of today's new music. They cream themselves over SHITE and then reject it when it gets reviewed on Stereogum or something. Nevertheless, they have turned me on to a lot of great records. |

somebody please explain DIY and shoegazer to this old fart.
anyways Eric Clap opinions dead on. Neil Young much better than he's been given credit for. For you younger folks SY and Rage against the Machine may not be considered unpopular but at my age (55) I don't have any friends my age that dig these two the way I do.... What we think of External? My self I'm a bit disappointed. It's tight and easy listening but it's safe. I was hoping for them to go to unchartered places this time around.... |

i like eternal more and more as I listen. better than Murray snoooze street
yeah I said it DIY - do it yourself, a culture that fostered the underground music and show-booking and underground labels in th late 70's 80's. it is as much an aesthetic as a way of life. shoegazer, originally derogatory term for bands that play gauzy wall of sound mope-rock, where all the band did was stand on stage and stare at their shoes.

I don't know how unpopular this is but....
I like NYC Ghosts & Flowers for what it is, but I'm friggin' glad they never made another album like it. Also, I absolutely loathe Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. I thought it was a a gauzy, druggy, depressing, dishonest piece of garbage. I actually thought The Soft Bulletin was ok, but not that great. AND I like early Madonna. I think she was a lot of fun and it works for me.

It's unpopular on here, the Sonic Youth message board. I've a lot of people mention Muse in "worst band ever" lists. Yes, Muse are pretty much a screamo version of Radiohead, but I find them to be one of the more entertaining mainstream bands. I think that about Maroon 5 as well. Here's another one many people may disagree with: Coldplay's first two albums helped define the early to mid 2000s for me. It's been VERY downhill since, but A Rush of Blood to the Head is a masterpiece.
