You just can't get away with that whole RnR excess thing these days. It doesn't suit the times. Whether we like it or not, todays cultural climate is far more compatible with a band like Radiohead than it is Radio Birdman.
I'm sure, as attitudes change, a band like GnR will re-emerge but, were they to try and break through today, they'd be laughed out of existence. Can you imagine a band getting anywhere putting out videos like ZZ Top were in the 80s? Well, maybe in some backwater, but they wouldn't be taken seriously anywhere else. |

^^Cantakerous^^ Sure, but even something like Motley Crue. A band like that relied on a certain kind of innocence that is now gone. AIDS has killed that - almost literally. The shag-happy days of the 70s and 80s are a thing of the past. It's all safe sex and worthy causes these days. Rock's sleaze-meisters of the past are all now either dead, in rehab or presenting reality TV shows.

Are we forgetting that GNR and the Crue were godawful bands that were every inch "part of the problem" with music in the 1980s?

Of course you can. I was referring to a specific aspect of RnR, which was very much a part of the three bands you mentioned: The Stones, Led Zep and the Pistols.

i just used melly's examples
i mean. it would be great if we could bring back those days but i don't see it happening. i would just like to see a decent rock band, or more of them.

Well, if demonrail waves his axe around as well as he did at Casa Melly last Sunday, then we could have a new Johnny Ramone on our hands

Oh yeah, for female geetarists, Liz Buckingham (13/Sourvein/Electric Wizard) is absolutely fucking amazing:
Also: Laura Pleasants (Kylesa):

I'm totally conflicted on this. Regarding Motley Crue, absolutely. A dreadful band of absolutely no interest or merit whatsoever. I do however have a real love for GnR's Appetite album which I just think of as a stunning collection of songs. But no, I can't really defend GnR as a whole either. I especially think it's funny how they perceive of themselves as having put the boot in on all those hair metal bands, when in fact they were merely the most popular example of the genre. I was discusing this with Rob Instigator in another thread. I really think it's different in the UK, insofar as however big GnR were here, they were never quite as massive a force in Britain as they were in the US. We can therefore enjoy them without having to deal with the crappy cult that seemingly followed them in the their home country. I'm certainly sure that had I been living in America in the 80s, I'd hate them as much as anyone else. |
