The dance scene from Pulp Fiction is ripped off from Band of Outsiders -- though I did read recently that Tarantino has "outgrown Godard", whatever that means. Does that mean his movies will get worse? Or maybe it was because of Godard's quote -- "instead of ripping me off, maybe he should send me a check." ... Godard also only got Travolta in his film because he was a fan of Blow Out, which is the only movie Travolta's in I'd reccomend.... anyway, I have to remind myself, for all his faults, at least Tarantino brought Sonatine, They Beyond, and Chunking Express to America. All 9/10 films, easily. Check 'em out.

Also, I don't rate films based on anything but how they entertain me. But, man, Fargo is a masterpiece.... I like how the main character doesn't show up until like 50 minutes into the film. It isn't cookie cutter. I like how the Coens will make these crime pictures but focus on more miniscule details besides the crime itself (like Blood Simple's preoccupation with cleaning up blood... interestingly, Blood Simple was shot by Sam Raimi, and it shows... amazing camera movements). Buscemi's performance is mindblowing, one of his best, maybe only eclipsed by his acting in Living in Oblivion... Just a masterful film, with topnotch acting, direction, and storytelling. Unlike most multimilliondollars mainstream movies, it doesn't treat its audience like idiots... it doesn't mind being a bit elliptical.. it has a haunting beautiful soundtrack... it's just an amazing movie.... Coens are topnotch... It's hard to believe Barton Fink was actually a successful movie. It's so good though.

Hahahahaha ni'k, you're fucking funny !!!

By the way, I'm glad you guys rated my top, even if you don't like some of the movies, that's just, like, my personal favorites, you know. (shit, I should have put The Big Lebowski in it... well, it made it into my top 20)

Sorry ASP, I haven't seen most of the movies in your top... I've only watched Blow Out (I'd give it 7/10, I like it but not my favorite De Palma movie, I'd go with Phantom of the Paradise), The Killer (9/10. Amazing, one of the best Asian movies of all time...), Pierrot le fou (7/10. Jean-Paul Belmondo is great in it but I like "A bout de souffle" better. The ending is insane though) and Taxi Driver (10/10. If it wasn't for Goodfellas, this would be my favorite Scorsese movie, I've never seen anything like it, De Niro's best performance EVER and this movie is dark as hell ! Great choice for the #1 spot.)

Hm. Breathless is probably my least favorite Godard film.

@atsonic, I know you rate on yr entertainment, but you also seem to be effected by like "oh I've seen that in another movie before" which doesn't really effect me. I do'nt care what scenes are stolen, or who does something better. I'm just like "oh yeah, I liked that one. It felt good to me. It hit me the right way." or "it didnt"

oh and yeah I've always just sort of thought of Blood Simple as a Raimi movie. More so.

NR, don't read my long rant, only Derek will find it interesting, just read the first 3 sentences, haha.

Hmm, well, Blood Simple isn't a Raimi movie at all, all he did was move a camera in a few scenes, so that's weird. Also, I am effected by how redundant a film is. I still am rating on entertainment -- I'm bored if I watch a Tarantino movie and he ripped off literally 30 minutes from another movie. Why watch the same old predictable crap when I can watch something unique? I mean, there are so many directors not doing anything interesting, just ripping off French New Wave films, literally movies from 40-50 years ago! What a joke. Tarantino just bores the hell out of me, aside from his first few movies, it's just crap I've already seen. And then true geniuses like Kitano are often overlooked. That is silly. Tsui Hark, DePalma, Ringo Lam, Brian Depalma, Kitano, Godard; all directors Tarantino has ripped off, and no one pays attention to their films. People need to expand their horizons. This isn't directed at anyone here, I post on IMDB and it really irritates me and it's something I don't get... see, I really don't understand how anyone even has the same tastes as anyone else -- we have access to EVERY movie, album, book, video game ever made. Literally a click away! Yet so many people have the exact same tastes, because they don't explore... I don't understand that. It's like with bands... so many bands doing the exact same shit, they are CONSCIOUSLY doing it, too... when I make music, I try to approach it as if I've never heard any other band.. I try not to pay attention to "theory" or "structure"... I think 99% of bands are purposely trying to sound like other bands. There's unlimited possibilities for sound, for structures, for riffs, for melodies, etc... then, why do so many bands sound EXACTLY alike? They're trying to! I mean, there's nothing wrong with homages, with tributes, with people doing the same thing -- but don't think I'm going to respect that, or enjoy it. I watch a thousand movies a year, and I get tired of the same ol' same ol'. On the other hand, over in Japan, despite the general sense of compacency and companies producing a billion sequels and so on.. there is still originality. Would a film like HANGING GARDEN ever come out here? No way! And that's one of the most GENIUS films ever made... but you'll never see that here. THE BIGGEST FILM OF THE YEAR last year was Love Exposure...... GODDAMN, I loved that movie. 4 hours long. Kung fu, transgender romance.. the best thing is that it's all about panty shots. And it made millions and millions of dollars. It was unique, it was hilarious, and no one here cares, and no one would even DARE to do ANYTHING this film did. THat's really sad to me. Unique movies/music/books/video games are dead. It's always been about money, but now more than ever, in America's fucked-up cellphone culture that doesn't care one iota about art, only about ripping off the best ideas and making it their own. You're either an artist or a craftsman. Why do I even bother "Expeirmenting" when I know I can do another shitty slasher film and people will cum over it? That's why I made Blaze the Pot Smoking Deer, as a joke... my concept was "hey, I'm going to do a show about smoking pot -- I don't even smoke pot! I'm going to spend NO TIME on it, show NO EFFORT.. I'll do throw in a little bit of my trademark weird tendencies.. but otherwise, I'm going to flat-out sell-out and see what happens!" Sure enough, it is my most successful work, winning awards, and so on and so forth. I am going to submit it to Adult Swim in the hopes that I'll be rich and famous. A rich and famous artist in my town who regularly sells $10-15 thousand dollar paintings told me I need to just do Blaze and I could be a millionaire. I am purposely selling out, and it feels great! Because it proves that you just feed into the simplicity of life and existence and cellphone culture and "ipad" "ipod" "iphone" "hdtv" "Bluray" BULLSHIT and don't make ANYTHING WITH A SOUL and you will be rich and famous. Why create art? Why do anything that has meaning attached to it? Make the simplest shit ever,.. that's how you get fucking rich. I'm not bitter, because I am very happy I have achieved what I have achieved, it's not about me, it's about the difference between American culture and the rest of the world. See, because most movies coming out are remakes of sequels of homages of tributes to regurgitated tired lazy crap with the same predictable shit that uninspired directors are biting, scraping, clawing at, to emulate some remnant of the remains of the French New Wave. But what about the Japanese New Wave? PASTORAL TO DIE IN THE COUNTRY is the best fucking movie ever!!!!!!!!! Why did no one care? Will anyone ever care? Nope -- not in America!

,Moral of the story? Watch Love Exposure, if you have 4 hours to kill!

You know what's really weird, though? That there hasn't been a Battle Royale ripoff film in America yet... I thought for sure Tarantino would have done that already.

I understand what yr saying Adam. I think in my case the problem is I really watch 98% horror movies. So to me Tarantino is awesome if I want to watch something like that, and really it's so rare that I'm not watching horror that I don't venture too deep into other pools. It's just me. I suppose I get a bit effected by redundancy in horror since I've seen so f'ing many of those films, but even then maybe not. I mean slashers are my favorite genre -- where redundancy and reusing conventions seems almost necessary. haha.

Well, actually, slasher redundancy doesn't bother me because you know what you're getting into. It's when a dude is supposed to be some groundbreaking genius, rewriting the rules of cinema and all this garbage.

Also, with horror, you got all these other elements that most genres don't explore. You got your kills scenes and their creativity, you got your atmosphere -- I mean, all these things can be explored in other genres, but you don't see insane oversaturated colors in most movies.. howerver, in horror, there's Suspiria, Body Melt, Brain Damage, weird solarized dayglo fun!

I am very entertained and inspired by horror movies, I think a lot of people write them off without thinking twice because they're usually relegated to mindless boneheaded shit. But that's why we're good friends, NR. Because I think we both see the beauty in horror. Most people would see Deep Red and think it's just another kill fest. But when I see the way the camera moves in and the curtains peel back... that's art, man. What is really separating that from Lynch... or Hitchcock?

I guess I just wish more people would open their minds, and expand their horizons. I'm not saying people should comb the underground like I do for every little gem. I just wish more people would watch Hana-Bi and have their minds blown and their hearts broken and their lives changed like I did. My girlfriend doesn't like crime films at all and Hana-Bi actually made her cry. I fell in love with her that night...

One of the reasons I respect you, NR, is your unflinching, stubbornness! Everyone, even hardened hardcore fanboys, hated Death Proof, except you! Haha. That always amuses me.. Yer Tarantino 4 Lyfe.

But at the same time, I think Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is by far the best TCM film.. by far by far BY FAR! And I don't think that's a very popular opinion at all.

I think everyone around here has funny opinions, that's why I continue to post here.

The concept of progress that we have in our modern day.... sigh.... only a few hundred years ago the world was much the same from one year to the next, now technology has thrust us on a non-stop bullet train to nowhere in particular. Our minds have become warped by this perception, and we no longer see the cycles that used to define our very existence.

Our rhythms have been broken, replaced with a contempt for all that is perceived as "old". The future is our goal, while the past represents all that is outdated or otherwise effectively dead to us. Mere existence is taken for granted; it is progress which matters.

We live in a society which has invented history so that we may dismiss it in our own delusional pursuit of grandeur.

exactly. That's why I respect you as well. And that's why I remain here. I know when I'm in the minority in my opinions, and although I might get some ribbing for say Death Proof for instance, I know that I'm "allowed" to have my own opinion and you guys respect that. There's a good ability here for us to all just be honest about what we like and don't like. And in the meantime, sometimes it leads to us turning each other on to new shit. And really that's what a board like THIS should be about.

I hate that most people dont see the art in horror. Horror is generally cast off as pr0n in a sense. "oh there's nothing to it -- some bad actors w bad dialogue say stuff and then fuc--- get killed."

god even something like I Know Who Killed Me was a million times more artful than -- I don't know what. But you know. Big movies that are supposed to be artful. Just the color palette of I Know Who Killed Me was beaitufil , of course borrowed mostly from the Italian Giallos, but still.

and there's lots of examples of this in horror. Amazing shots , colors , pacing, etc. But even the distributors dont care. Paramount has made a fortune off of bloodshed and is embarrassed to be known as such. Sad.

I agree with Adam in the respect that people are too preoccupied with their grown-up toys (iphones, blackberry, HDTV et al) than actually exploring and finding art that speaks to them and sides with their personality. I have a feeling this generation will grow up to be mindless zombies, glued to their facebook page and that's depressing.

The biggest annoyance ever is when I'm with someone and they sit and text. I'll throw that £400 iPhone out of the window and see how they survive.
