PAULINE OLIVEROS & MORE

AGP58 collects works by Pauline Oliveros, Lucia Dlugoszewski, Ben Johnston, and Toshi Ichyanagi from five LPs released by American labels in the 1970s. Oliveros is represented by a live electronic composition (I of IV) a choral work (Sound Patterns) and work for flute, percussion, and string bass (Outline). The two compositions by Dlugoszewski are for chamber ensembles. Ben Johnston's Casta Bertram is for string bass and other nonsense (see notes), and was discovered in my stacks after the release of AGP9. Ichyanagi's Extended Voices is from an Odyssey LP of that name that also features John Cage's Solos for Voice 2 from AGP56 and Oliveros' Sound Patterns. The other compositions on that LP are all available on CD.

Two of the works in AGP58 have been released on CD but are now out of print. These tracks were transcribed from LPs that are in excellent condition, but there are varying levels of pressing noise. While I would describe the pressing noise as only light on most tracks, it is clearly audible in the quietest passages, and there is more such noise than on the last several AGP releases.
  • I of IV [20:34]
  • Sound Patterns [4:04]
  • Outline [14:25]
  • Casta Bertram [10:46]
  • Fire Fragile Flight [8:32]
  • Angels of the Inmost Heaven [8:25]
  • Extended Voices [11:14]

LUIS DE PABLO

AGP17 features three electroacoustic works by the Spanish composer Luis de Pablo, all created between 1974 and 1976, when de Pablo was working at the electronic music studio at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Luis de Pablo founded the first electronic music studio in Spain, in 1965, and composed a number of electroacoustic works starting shortly thereafter (in addition to his large catalog of vocal and instrumental works). These three have an intriguing reverberatory sound that can be a bit murky at times but conveys an atmosphere of mystery.

"Visto de Cerca" is for three musicians and tape, the musicians singing as well as playing a variety of instruments. "Chaman" appears to be de Pablo's only published work for electronic tape alone. "Al son que tocan" is an homage to the great Spanish poet Antonio Machado, for voice, instruments, and tape.
  • Visto de Cerca [21:34]
  • Chaman [22:48]
  • Al son que tocan, side 1 [16:21]
  • Al son que tocan, side 2 [16:00]

CHARLES CHAYNES

AGP137 is the third and last featuring the music of Charles Chaynes, a French composer who held executive positions at France-Musique and Radio-France for much of his career, and so has produced a smaller body of work than he might have otherwise. This installment comprises his opera "Erzsebet", from 1983. It tells the story of Ezsebet Bathory, a Hungarian noblewoman who was punitively immured in her castle after being convicted of torturing a series of young girls. It is a tour de force performance by Christiane Eda-Pierre, who portrays Erzsebet's increasingly delusional internal dialogue in the years until her death. The theme lends itself nicely to a variety of weird, disturbed musical atmospheres. Chaynes makes extensive use of massed strings and brass, producing aggregate effects that blur the boundary between harmony and timbre.

  • Erzsebet, side A [29:27]
  • Erzsebet, side B [29:15]

I've never come across a physical copy of this, i understand is sort of rare, so i thought i'd share the .flac files that i snagged from The Pirate Bay, in case somebody here could have a similar interest in this item as me. It's out of print as far as i can tell anyway, so it certainly fits this thread...

I'll continue uploading some other recordings from the Avantgarde Project hopefully this weekend, meanwhile i didn't want to let this link expire without any use....

AGP62.

WOLFGANG RIHM

Transcription of Wolfgang Rihm's opera "Jakob Lenz", from a 2LP release on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi. Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz was a poet, playright, and friend of Goethe's, who experienced a psychotic breakdown starting in 1777. The year before, he wrote the play "Die Soldaten" that was the inspiration for Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera of the same name, the concert suite from which was featured in AGP10.

Rihm's opera is scored for chamber orchestra, voices, and chorus, and has a correspondingly spare sound. The instrumentation and vocal techniques beautifully express the emotional tumult experienced by the poet during the emergence of his madness. "Jakob Lenz" was Rihm's second opera, composed when he was just 26 years old. Rihm has since become one of the most popular avant-garde composers in Germany, with many works currently available on CD. "Jakob Lenz", however appears still to be out of print.
  • Jakob Lenz, scenes 1-5 [20:17]
  • Jakob Lenz, scenes 6-7 [19:49]
  • Jakob Lenz, scenes 8-11 [14:28]
  • Jakob Lenz, scenes 12-end [16:41]

ASIAN PERCUSSION

selection of works by three Asian composers: Yasukazu Amemiya from Japan, Nguyen Thien Dao from Vietnam, and Kil-sung Oak from Korea. The two works by Yasukazu Amemiya feature an especially vivid and detailed recording on the Japanese RCA label. Amemiya is primarily a percussionist, but his compositions exhibit a very nice sense of the sound potential of the instruments at his disposal.
  • Yasukazu Amemiya: Monochrome Sea [21:41]
  • Yasukazu Amemiya: Summer Prayer [13:47]
  • Nguyen Thien Dao: May [26:06]
  • Kil-sung Oak: Amorphosis [9:13]

AGP 97

DONALD ERB

AGP97 features works by Donald Erb, an American composer from Youngstown, Ohio. Erb is noted both for his masterful orchestrations (in fact, he was tapped by the Encyclopaedia Britannica to write their article on orchestration) and as one of the first composers to write for a chamber ensemble with synthesizer (in "Reconnaissance", included in this installment). The synthesizer attracted him as a way of combining electronic and instrumental sounds while preserving the "give-and-take quality" of a chamber ensemble. And in "Reconnaissance", there is much finer interleaving of electronic and acoustic sounds than is typical in such compositions. The synthesizer in this performance is played by Michael Tilson Thomas.

  • Reconnaissance [17:17]
  • In No Strange Land [17:04]
  • Symphony of Overtures [16:03]
  • The Seventh Trumpet [10:37]
  • Concerto for Solo Percussionist [12:17]
  • Three Pieces for Brass Quintet and Piano [7:45]

AGP 11

ARIBERT REIMANN-REQUIEM

AGP 11 is the first of two featuring the work of Aribert Reimann, a gifted German composer born in 1936, whose work combines a stirring lyricism with highly stimulating harmonies and orchestrations. Some of his compositions are in print, including his opera "King Lear", and a selection of works for voice and piano that was recorded in the 1970s is scheduled for re-release this month (there is a listing for it at Presto Classical). However, some of his most significant compositions have never been released on CD, including the works that comprise AGP 11 and 12.
  • Introitus (Requiem aeternum), Kyrie, Dies Irae (part 1) [26:42]
  • Dies Irae (part 2) [25:00]
  • Offertorium, Sanctus [19:59]
  • Agnus Dei, Communio (Lux aeterna) [17:10]
