I think it did bomb. I remember watching the trailer for this movie and being completely turned off. I was stunned when I read Yo La Tengo wrote the score to the movie

BTW, When In Rome is a really bizarre rom-com. It had it's moments. But for the most part it was strange in an 80's kind of way. BUT what I wanted to point out was that Ghostface Killah was in it for some reason. Really weird brief cameo haha. Ghostface & Kristen Bell in the same movie. Awesome.

Now I'm watching Couples Retreat.

Rewatched Enter the Void AGAIN with a friend. Up there with Giuseppe's "the fast" as film of the year.

Well, this film is an atmospheric experiment, not really a "film" in the conventional sense. This one just gets better and better with every watch. I wasn't a Noe fan at all but this film was a masterpiece. You were probably just expecting something different.

It's been a great movie week for me. Just watched Hana-Bi and was completely blown, one of the best films I've seen. It managed to be deeply touching, darkly humorous, violent and extremely beautiful all at once. So good.

And Dead Man's Letters has to be the best post-apocalyptic movie I've seen. So dark and depressing from start to finish.

Really? As far as Coen films go, I love most of them, except some of the George Clooney ones, and the Tom Hanks one... yet A Serious Man didn't do much for me.. especially when compared to recent films like No Country for old MEN and The MAN who wasn't There (see what I did there, MAN?). I appreciate how low-key it was, after the HUGE successes of their recent films.. but man, it just didn't really do much for the most part, it kinda fell flat. Shrug. Some of the actors (all the unknowns!) were cool, and it had a dark vibe at times, a bit unlike most of Coens films (not quite as dark as a Solondz film or anything but stll..). Perhaps a bit underrated actually (I seem to remember it getting awful reviews) but an 8/10 is what I'd give Fargo, Blood Simple, Barton Fink, and the Big Lebowski.. y'know?

re-watched

FROWNLAND - 9/10

This is going to be an acquired taste, it looked and felt a bit like a fotopolous film though it's not as brilliant as his stuff. this is one dirty, slowburning, grimey, nasty, awkward, dark as hell film.

Never does "much", doesn't need to, gets by on brilliant atmosphere, challenging structure, and completely unlikeable characters!

This is the reason I watch movies though, all in all; these nasty, honest gems. This guy spent ALL HIS MONEY on his film -- kinda like the similiarly brilliant Reflections of Evil.. it's so fucking in-your-face and raw and purposely abrasive that you really have to sit and wonder.. why. As much as I liked it, it will appeal only to a very very small, very particular sect of people.

Which is really fucking inspiring to me. And it also kinda makes me want to give up, as a filmmaker.. I'll never match brilliance like this. Highly reccomended... that you read up on it a bit first and see if it's something you think you'll like. Since Derek has quit the board and will never see this.... hey, Derek, check this film out, you'll dig it.

And, yes, it was named after a Beefhart song.

Yup. A new Coen classic in my book. Not quite as good as Fargo, or Lebowski... but definitely on par, if not better, than Blood Simple or Barton Fink, although it's a completely different kind of film. Maybe I'm nuts though, 'cause I felt the same damn way about their Ladykillers remake, and Raising Arizona.

I definitely see what you mean of it feeling like a less-dark Solondz film, I was actually thinking the same thing, but it's also sort of a breed of it's own. Sorta in the same vein as The Weatherman.... sorta. I love dark comedies, and while this had some great mean-spirited humor in it, I'd consider it much more of a drama about the uncertainty of life. I absolutely loved it.

I guess I just need to watch it again. I saw it the day it came out. It just felt a bit too dry. Also, didn't like the opening at all, which felt really out of place. Definitley need to get some more dark comedies. You have seen Corndog Man, right? It's dark as hell, and also THE funniest movie I've ever seen -- it made my grandpa laugh (!), and I've NEVER seen him laugh, really. He's the dryest, meanest person I've ever met, no shit.

Fargo's a 10/10 imo.
