@louder
@sev not sure if you guys peeped that jazz thread I started, but I've been listening to and loving these 2 records that you both will have an interest in: Robert Glasper - Covered Kamasi Washington - The Epic Glasper (piano) and Washington (sax) both provided much instrumentation (along w/ Thundercat) to To Pimp A Butterfly...

Yeah, I've had The Epic for some time, and I've enjoyed it well enough, but I disagree with a lot of the reviews I've read that seem to attribute some true originality to Washington's work, because the way I see/hear it, he's re-hashing several different eras of Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and others. I think it was my comment about this that sparked that really long discussion jazz earlier in the thread (or was that at in the "What are you listening to?" thread? Meh. Dunno.) I haven't heard the other, but I'll check out your thread and give it a listen. Thanks! |

I'm not sure if this thread's just moving too fast for me lately or what (I've been renovating a fucking house in the country that was recently placed in my possession, so I haven't had a lot of chill time), but I feel like I'm out of step... anyone talking 12RTD II yet?
Oh, and I guess there's a new Underachievers album coming out. On RMG, nonetheless. I thought they were signed to Brainfeeder? Oh well, should be pretty tight: |

new Future album in July 17, so that's a week from now! i love those short album announcements, having to wait MONTHS for an album and getting through delays was so frustrating.

sev, Coltrane's influence is undeniable on Washington. That said, I think (the 3rd of it I've heard) it's really great.

Well I live in the states, so clearly you haven't been trying hard enough (ha) Yeah, man, go pick that shit up ASAP. I really like it. But again, that's no surprise. I still think 36 Seasons was an incredible record too, but it was bogged down by its storyline. Without the constant narrative it could have been a Supreme Clientele -Level masterwork. 4real. I hope a sequel to THAT isn't coming, as much as I liked it. I want GFK to get back to business with some "normal" non rap-opera hip hop joints now. |

Well, I'm pretty sure I've made several reference to the time I spent over there when I was younger, without a great deal of explanation. Probably my fault really. |

You've lost me. So you live in a highly conservative area? Oh well. I can't recall why I even asked now. And yes, Twelve Reasons to Die II is out, and it's a winner, though for some reason I have no inclination to declare it one of the best of the year. It's totally a fun listen, and may even be better than the first, but it's hard to compare such a single-minded, borderline franchise album to the expansive and genre wide appeal of these epic releases by Vince Staples, Kendrick and Lupe. I can't wait for y'all to hear it though. I want to talk about the ending. It's fairly awful, actually. Really, it's just a sucky ass ending, and I see no point in it. Whatever, you'll know what I'm talking about after you listen. |

old white rockers (as evidenced in this thread) still see them as the pinnacle of hip-hop though, hehe. |

ITS MUTHAFUCKIN 2015 AND YALL WOULDNT EVEN BELIEVE THAT AT THIS MOMENT I AM STILL DRESSED EXACTLY LIKE THIS RECORD COVER AND CURRENTLY POSTED UP LITERALLY WITH A 40? One of my students once told me, "you dress like a 90s rapper."

Count your blessings, friend. A tenth grader once asked me if I was metrosexual while I was subbing for a high school social studies class. If this had happened to me as a university TA, I may have engaged the student in a discussion about sex VS. gender... but at a public high school? Nope. I just pretended to be really focused on counting the number of worksheets to hand out. |

The pinnacle of militant, political, hardcore rap. Ask any rapper worth their salt and they will tell you likewise.
