You do realize that most readers of Superhero comics don't read them exclusively right? Generalizing such a popular, and varied genre is quite foolish and self-limiting. A lot of those books go just as deep into emotional and political issues as your beloved indie rags.

Judging the quality of a book by whether or not it supports its publication through ad-space is also pretty tacky. Just lettin' you know.

You like men in tights, I get it. I'll stick to the art without ads in the middle of them and you can keep staring at crotch mounds and Arnold chests. Superhero comics are for idiots.

I grew up reading 2000AD, Starblazer, Commando and, of course, especially if you're a Brit, the Beano and Dandy.

Bumping this thread. What comic books are you guys reading lately? I got my first e-comic recently Wytches Vol. 1, and I'm loving it, but sadly there is only one volume of that so far. So now I'm already looking for my next read. I suppose I could always get Watchmen. Yet, I'm also thinking something more recent. I've heard great things about Saga. I've also never read Locke & Key, any other reccomendations? I love stuff that's dark, weird and really engrossing within the horror/sci-fi vein.

I'm getting caught up with all the new DC Rebirth stuff. Superman, Action Comics, Batman, Detective Comics, Flash, Green Arrow, and DC Universe. About ¾ of the way through what's available at this point.

I also just re-read the first volume of the '08 Guardians of the Galaxy reboot by Bendis ("Cosmic Avengers"), and read Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe in about half an hour last weekend.

... I have also been returning to Watchmen a bit. Not re-reading it in its entirety, but reading sections here and there because ... Well ...

SPOILER:

At least 2 (probably 4)Watchmen characters have "invaded" the DC Universe, and somehow altered the timeline of the post-crisis and New 52 characters in a seriously mindfucking kind of way, and that is essentially the backdrop for all of Rebirth.

It's fuckin' good shit.

Thank you for the suggestions, I skimmed over them and they all seem varied and intriguing. Can't say if all the post-comic stuff is collected in Wytches, it might be at the end, so far I've just been reading the comics so anything extra might be at the end of it, might not. Locke and Key does have the advantage of being completed and written by Joe Hill whose novels I like but have yet to read his comic book stuff. If you are asking what platform I'm using to read my digital comics I'm reading on my iPad.

Not directed at me, I know, but I'm answering anyway because I just happen to be burning up my iPad with digital comics these days.

DC doesn't have a subscription comic service (yet), and because at least ¾ of the titles I read on a regular basis are DC, this basically means that I pretty much have to just use iBooks via the iTunes Store when I'm reading on my iPad.

Marvel does offer a subscription service called Digital Comcs Unlimited (or "DCU," which was totally unintentional, I'm sure and was in no way intended as an affront to, y'know, DCU.) I don't subscribe because I don't read enough Marvel to make it worth it, and what I do read is usually older stuff.

So again, I use my iPad, or my iPhone to download comics from iBooks. But no matter what you're using to get recent titles from major publishers, you pretty much have to pay cover price. I don't mind this really, because I like giving my business to Apple, but if you're working with a slim budget, or saving up for something, this option simply isn't practical. Even though the titles are only about $2.99 per issue, if you read a lot, that's certainly going to add up.

The same is true of Amazon/Kindle. I would not recommend using a Kindle product for comics. I have a Paperwhite that serves me well for non-graphic reading, but the "Fire" models boast a horrendous UX and slow to a goddamn crawl if you try to load something the size of even a basic 20-30 page single monthly issue. So, if I DO use Kindle, I use the Kindle application on my iPad, and it works about as well as iBooks.

It's an imperfect system at this point. Why are we paying cover prices when publication and printing fees don't apply, and therefore have no business being factored into the digital price? iTunes (usually) doesn't charge full price for albums or books, so why the hell are they doing so for comics?

Generally, I don't really like streaming unlimited services for media, but is we're going to have them for films and music and video games, we should certainly have them for comics. A Spotify or Netflix kind of situation for Marvel, DC, IDW, etc. is something I would gladly pay $10-15/month for.

I'm of two minds about the comic itself. I don't actually think it's the greatest graphic novel of all time. Far from it really. But it's simply brilliant from a "big picture" perspective, and it contains some of the absolute best and most influential writing in comic history. It's definitely a must-read.

(I've always kinda wished someone other than Gibbons had drawn it. I just don't care for his art. Every face, every hair style, every bulbous eye, looks like it came from the same comic book illustrator's Mr. Potato-Head kit. There were so many more versatile and skilled artists at work in those days. The comic could have been several times better, in my opinion, if it was a little bit more pleasing to look at.)

You know, I heard about ComiXology before and initially I thought well maybe I should have checked that site first before going through the iTunes store. Then I started to read the reviews of their app and people were giving it bad reviews, saying it was slow amongst other complaints.

Sure, it's frustrating for iOS users, but you can literally take 2 seconds to make the purchases on the site (on your computer, or even right in your browser on your iPad), and it becomes a small inconvenience at worst. The level of backlash was really not deserved.

I tried the app a while back. Quite a while back, now. I want to say 2011 or 2012, which was when I started really experimenting with multiple mobile and 3/4g devices.
I was kind of appalled by the lack of actual content that was available. I just remember being frustrated as hell because I'd type in a title like Hatter M or Ronin, and nothing would come up. Or I'd type in Superman, and there would be a ton of old, out of order issues.

Maybe I'll check it out again, but I certainly won't be using a subscription service that doesn't even offer Marvel or DC. I heard about this. Worthless for a reader like myself. I've played around with tons of totles from tons of publishers and the only stuff I want to read is DC, Vertigo, Marvel, Dark Horse, and occasionally IDW or Titan.

amerikan, how do you feel about the new Berserk Anime. I'm gonna watch tonight after work and stuff. They're skipping the history and just starting from the Black Swordsman right? I'm kind of happy about that, if I see that homosexual tension between Griffith and Guts, I'll kill myself.
