This is one damn psychadelic, DISTURBING, SHOCKING, hallucinatory film. It looks JUST LIKE a real snuff film, at times. The effects are GRAPHIC. But what really makes this film shine is the soundtrack. This has been a big inspiration to me and my movies -- you know how my soundtracks are relentless and there's LOTS going in, and every scene has layers and layers of fucked-up sounds? I got that from this film, except this film is ALL "horror movie sounds", there are weird digitized screams in the soundtrack that have nothing to do with what you see on screen. There is all sorts of weird phasing and pitchshifting and overbearing organs and overblown Sunn guitar drone. Just insane. Probably the most disturbing soundtrack ever, I dunno if it's ever been released separately.

This film made me sick to watch -- I dunno if it was more disturbing than the finale of Kichiku Dai Enkai, but AS A WHOLE, it's definitely the most unsettling and depressing film ever.

Made by a guy who only made one film ever, a heroin addict who made the film for drug money, and is the star of the film, and is clearly fucked up out of his mind the whole time. I think he died of a drug overdose many years later, big shock.

Highly reccommended if you like "REAL" horror. Not in my opinion. This is fact: real fucking disturbing horror.

Last House is a great little disturbing gem. But, even though the above story concerning its director "Victor Janos" sounds alluring and perfectly molded to the gritty exploitative vibe of the film, it was actually made by porn director Roger Watkins. All of this is detailed in the excellent book called "Sleazoid Express" by Bill Landis and Michelle Clifford, which is a must-own for any lover of down-n-dirty films. There's even a picture of Watkins taken in 2001 and the detailed history of the film that was restored, lost, cut, lost again, restored from a Spanish print with gore intact then eventually losta again!

Inception

7/10

It certainly didn't suck, but it's easily the most overrated movie of last year. I think everyone was just impressed with the special effects, which were pretty cool (nice MC Escher homage in there), but that's not enough to carry a film once it leaves the big screen. Also, the subplot with Leonardo di Caprio's wife was a bit depressing. Are we really so starved for quality Hollywood films these days that even the most slightly intelligent film gets hailed as a masterpiece?

One last thing: I don't know about you guys, but my dreams are never that literal...

There's another great article on that in the (I think) first issue of Flesh and Blood magazine, produced in the UK in the 90. I'm not sure if it had any US distribution but if you like Sleazoid Express you'd love it. I'm not a big fan of LH but the whole backstory is pretty fascinating.

Anyway, watched this yesterday

Local Hero (10/10)

A completely irrational 10/10 but it's a film I still get nothing but joy from, even after seeing it countless times. Just a really lovely film.

Such a great film. Bill Forsyth is an under rated director of great little humanistic comedies. Even his "mainstream" effort, "Breaking In" with Burt Reynolds in the 80's, is pretty damn good. I wish his '87 film "Housekeeping" would get an official DVD release.

Watched "The Mattei Affair" last night. Francesco Rosi is a great director that receives no cred. And at least one scene MUST HAVE influenced P.T. Anderson and "There Will Be Blood".

tremors 3: 5/10

cheyenne autumn: 10/10

it's difficult to give it a ten because of the overlong wyatt earp/comedy part(which had it's moments at least) but it was really a moving and disturbing film experience

Definitely gets weaker with additional watching. At the theater I was impressed at home not so much. 3rd time through I fell asleep and my dream was better.

At first I read this as 3.5/10 instead of what it really is, and I was thinking 'you're out of your fucking mind!'. But yeah, probably right call, that 3rd movie is eh...

As for the Inception talk, that movie might be overrated, though I still really enjoy it. I just enjoyed all the stuff it made me think about, which is alot more than most hollywood pictures these days. What might have gotten it an excessive amount of praise is the otherwise lack of hard sci-fi films these days. Instead we usually get uh, green lantern and transformers. So it's nice when I get to say "huh, that's something to think about.' instead of 'huh, I wish that guy would stop making movies.' So in that regard it felt pretty fresh.

This movie was great. Super sad and felt like a bunch of little mini movies which was really neat. Giulietta Masina is absolutely intoxicating in it and she steals every scene (as she should, being the lead). But now I think I could watch everything she's been in. Fellini sure manages a really bleak atmosphere through means I can't even put together. I'm not sure if it was intended to be an anti-male picture, but almost every guy in this picture is an absolute puss. Moochers, faux macho bravado, chauvinists, and more of the same. The end is terrific, and not even a surprise, but works on some level that's really moving. Thank God there's no dialogue during it. Fantastic.

talk about a blood fest. Haven't seen any other Argento movies that I know of. What are the other two movies in this witches' trilogy? I thought his daughter was a looker despite her lack of top notch skills....

Chika I'm assuming you watched "Mother of Tears" cause I think that's the only one from the trilogy with Asia in it. The other two are his most famous film "Suspiria" the first film, and "Inferno" the second film.

I'd definitely recommend you see La Strada if you liked Masina in Nights of Cabiria. A beuatiful film. I sometimes wonder about the roles Fellini gave to Masina (his real life wife). There's a cruelty about them but Masina herself was apparently completely happy with it. And did you know the Shirley MacLaine musical Sweet Charity was a remake of Nights of Cabiria?

Yeah, La Strada has always interested me, but I've never gotten around to seeing it. The whole movie it didn't occur to me that she was in La Strada until the end when she's walking on the road with that black tear or whatever, for some reason it reminded me of the cover to La Strada, which I've seen a zillion times at the library.

I didn't know that about Shirley Maclaine and that movie. I'll definitely watch that. Love Shirley, especially in Some Came Running.
