the lead actress was great too, it's a shame she didn't make any non pornos

I was a bit disappointed with Thriller. I can't put my finger on exactly what it is, I just think that without all of its 'transgressive' elements it really drag on. I should watch it again. Isn't it meant to have been one of the main inspirations behind Kill Bill?

Huge Fererra fan here. I'm probably in the minority, but one of my faves is "Dangerous Game" aka Snake Eyes from 1992 with Keitel and Madonna. It's a gruesome psychological study about a director and his two actors whose personal lives violently blur with the film they're working on. There are one or two scenes so tough to watch.... its a masterpiece that got shat upon when it was released.

I also really love "The Funeral", but both of these are not goood starting points for his work. I'd recommend "Bad Lt.", "King of New York" or "R-Xmas" as better places to start. And damn it, I'm still looking for a copy of his still unreleased "Mary" or "Go Go Tales" if anyone knows......

Thanks for the recommendations. I haven't watched ''Death Wish II'' and "Bad Lieutenant" for whatever reason. Since I've posted about ''I Spit on Your Grave'', check out without a critical mindset ''Naked Vengeance'', a movie which plagiarises it a bit but manages to improve the rope murder by the lake by combining it with a more creative use of the speedboat.

Bad Lieutenant is ace. I got good memories of watching that lying in bed with vodka disguised in a water bottle. Also with friends at college used to re-enact the part where Harvey Keitel is wanking in the street. Good times.

Ferrara : The Funeral, it has Chris Penn in his best role (awarded in Berlin or Venice, one of these two), and Del Toro's great, and there's Walken, Gallo...

people might laugh at me for saying this here, where this movie gets so much love, but i tried watching bad lieutenant and got fucking bored to tears.

so harvey keitel wanders about the city, snorts coke, tries to win increasing gambles at the world series, fucks hookers, steals from thieves-- and i just wanted it to be over. why? because in a way nothing happens. addicts on a bender are always the same and it's fucking boring. maybe i waited too long to watch this because it was nothing new to me at this point.

the best thing i got from it was learning about the beautiful cokehead/junkie who wrote the script-- she was a curious person, and i've looked at her photos trying to decipher her life: http://zoelund.com/ .

Kikujiro is so heartfelt and honest, its the first film in a long time I've had urges to watch it again just a couples days of viewing it.

Given its cast that really should've been a far better film than it is.

I thought Gary Weis did a an excellent job at portraying the gangs without scrutinising their lives in what could have turned out to be a too journalistic, judgmental way. A new favourite for sure.

I am watching several episodes of a manga tv series called ''Lone Wolf and Cub'', which was a big favourite of mine as a kid. Apparently a total of 7 films have been based on this manga and I never knew about it until today!!

I'm just amazed 80 Blocks doesn't have a bigger cult following. Have you seen the Hughes Brothers' Pimp? Not on the same level as 80 Blocks but still a great watch.

PS: That film Blackout you listed. I hope you didn't watch it thinking it was the Ferrara one.

Me too. And the TM exhibition was also the first time I'd seen any of it. Although I think I came away being more a fan of her as a person than of her work.
