I've always had problems with Don De Lillo's dialogue but on the written page it feels more acceptable than when it's actually spoken in a film. Robert Pattinson especially is just not good enough an actor to pull it off. For a billionaire wizzkid genius he seems nothing more than baffled by the things he's saying (and I refuse to buy into any 'but that's intentional' arguments). Things only improve (slightly) towards the end, when Paul Giamatti turns up. Otherwise, and I usually hate this term, it all comes across as being a bit pseudo intellectual.

The Master

Honestly I thought it was brilliant. Both Phoenix and Hoffman were just incredible and deserve every award they can get.
Two scenes stand out for me. The 'interrogation' scene where Phoenix is told not to blink and also the prison scene. For the both of them I could feel myself getting more and more drawn into the film.

Absolutely love this. I'm wondering if it might be Scorsese's most underrated film.

Honestly, you should check out The Colour of Money. It'd make a fantastic double bill with Hard Eight. They're uncannily alike except that instead of John C. Reilly you get the far less sympathetic, far more in your face Tom Cruise, and Paul Newman plays a great 'Sydney' kind of character. Seriously, give it a try. I'd be really surprised if you don't end up liking it.

Regarding Cosmopolis, I dunno, I'm just not a fan of Cronenberg, I guess. His films always seem really cold to me. In that sense, he sort of reminds me of Kubrick, except Cronenberg doesn't even have Kubrick's visual flair.

Anyway, just watched ...

The Town

I didn't have any big expectations with this but ended up really liking it. It's all pretty obvious but done very well. Although any film with this kind of storyline would have to be atrocious for me not to at least quite like it.

... because humanity doesn't understand them yet (not completely;not THAT kind of robot) and because that's what we-- or, white-ass pop culture, do with things we don't understand... we vilify them.

Seriously, I think it's probably universally instinctual. if I knew anything about the way Africa, or the Navajo, viewed robots/artificial intelligence in general, I'd be tempted to make such a claim. but it's true all over the world and throughout history in terms of the way people view and interpret the actions and motivations of any person, thing, culture, trend, or idea that falls outside their own understanding.

Then again, it may just be that "nice" robots/aliens might just be boring as fuck. I mean, there's Robocop, and.. hmm. The kid from AI? Naw, even he was super creepy in a way. lol!

rashomon

best thanksgiving movie ever mhuaaahaahaaahaaa

seriouly this is like the 3rd time i watch this movie and i couldn't remember the actual story. but now i do. one needs notes to track all the bullshit going on.

anyway, good stuff. the long takes make me space out at times and start thinking of other things, and sure there's much better kurosawa movies, but still... his love of photographing cloth (see: aldous huxley's peyote books) is as evident here as it was in ran. gorgeous. even if the restored version has some contrast issues (maybe from the original?). eh, i ramble...

I have seen the Hustler and I do prefer it but that doesn't take anything away from The Colour of Money.

Last couple of days watched

The Fighter

I enjoyed it. It's all a bit obvious but saved largely by a really good cast.

The Hurt Locker.

Brilliant film.
