Walken made that movie. He made it seem bigger and more ominous and more important. awesome menace.

I think he makes everything he is in. Really, what was Dogs of War without Walken?? Haha, he was even great in Sarah, Plain and Tall, in fact, I think that was my first introduction to Chris Walken back in elementary school! Suicide Kings was total shit, but Chris was delightful in it. It was like a TV movie knock of Kings of New York, wait, that is probably because it was made by a TV movie director I don't know HOW THE FUCK I haven't seen Seven Psychopaths yet, I mean really.. In Last Man Standing he manages to out swag Bruce Willis in one of The Bruce's most swag roles. Was thee drug lord villain in Day of Atonement, a movie that would have been a disaster without him. Ok, Communion didn't work, but that is only because Walken kept doing devious Walken gestures and mannerisms, we weren't sure who was the villain then, him or the aliens? At Close Range was epic, even with that bad mustache. He couldn't save A View To Kill, even as a blonde. Mousehunt was fucking hilarious, it is what makes Walken Walken, the blend between absurdly funny deadpanning and ruthless evil (sort of like the bad cop version of Liam Neilson). Mr. Smith in the Nick of Time was sinister. I even enjoyed Catch Me If You Can.. I won't even bring of King of New York, its unnecessary. Same with Deer Hunter, though I don't think its his best at all..

No, but he was there on the boat. Walken was considered part of the fight, but not a suspect. It is suspicious either way, but I recall Walken has taken accusations to be so absurd so as to not even respond to them. After all, he is said to have loved or at least been deeply involved with Natalie Wood, I'm sure its a sensitive issue to say the least...

recently watched saló. i had a copy sent to my by the legendary toxic johnny back when it was still banned/impossible to find/etc. that time around it was very hard to watch and incomprehensible to me, but it left a mark-- i knew i was missing something.
this time i got the criterion disc and prepared for like a week: watched all the included documentaries first, read articles about it, etc. only then i was able to watch, and it still took me all of 4 days to finish the movie itself (one day for the antechamber and then one "circle" per day.) damn. as a critique of fascism and totalitarian consumerism i have to say-- amazing job. still very difficult to keep eyes on it. between falling asleep and being horrified, it was a heavy homework, and it wasn't "enjoyable" --but it was worth the effort. |

I must watch that. I'm not familiar with the film, I know its on Criterion and the artwork of that version is quite eye-grabbing, so I've had it on my watch list. Its sounds quite unsettling and suspenseful.

That's how I feel about most "modern" movies now. The abuse of CGI and "loudness" have made movies disorienting. Its like, "Can we bring back actual make-up, costumes, set building, actors please?"

As usual, it was actually a fairly terrible movie, yet Chris Walken somehow mad it excellent. His dead-panning was superb, and Woody almost beat him out! This movie was totally stupid, but I loved it for no reason in particular. Maybe because it evolved from a murder movie to a stoner comedy?

They're on a Brian De Palma spree on tv.
I watched Blow Out and eventually liked it more than the dubbed version I remembered (I'd keep thinking I was hearing Gérard Depardieu's voice whenever Travolta spoke, and Nancy Allen's French voice harmed her acting). So I decided to give Obsession another try - I hadn't liked it at all some 20 years ago. I thought then that Cliff Robertson was terrible. Three years ago maybe I saw him in Samuel Fuller's Underground USA; the film was grrrrreat and Robertson was no stranger to that. Today's verdict on Obsession: terrible with glimpses of wow; Bernard Herrmann's music is too present, the light doesn't seem to fit the story, there's no tempo, the plot is ludicrous, a camera move reminding me of Contempt is out of place, Robertson doesn't play at all, John Lithgow's sudden impulse to reveal too much is cretinous... and yet... Geneviève Bujold is brilliant, the little girl part is splendid, the scales work, and Cliff Robertson's last (long) shot is truly great, as he delivers something quite astounding. |

Expectation has everything to do with how I watch a movie. Probably a bad thing.
SALO: I heard it was REALLY fucked-up. I found it only mildly fucked-up, so I was actually kinda bored by it. 2012: I heard it was a worthless piece of shit, so I ended up enjoying it a lot because it doesn't entirely suck. Great special effects, HUGE death count. Seriously, I'd rather watch 2012 again than Salo. |
