im gonna hold my breath and say ornette coleman. free jazz and the shape of jazz to come are twop of my favorite records ever, but i really dont think "free jazz" really fits his style. he definitley isnt as wild as the other free jazz legends like sun ra, cecil taylor, albert ayler, and others. i think hes genius and amazing, but no more "free" or "avant" then john coltrane.

I don't know. I read about her and interviews with her and bought the first CD as a result. Disappointing is not a strong enough word for my reaction. Needless to say, I no longer own that CD.

I could go on forever, but fuck it. Like I said in my first post, almost too many to name... most bands.

I wasn't terribly taken with the Velvet Underground's first album, when I first listened to it. Save for ''Venus In Furs'', ''Heroin'' and ''European Son'', the rest of the songs seemed more than a little ordinary to my ears. This doesn't mean that I don't love that album, though.

Mozart sounded too ''classical'' to my ears.

Here, a quick way to tell you a band will probably be disappointing:

- If it's called "Freak folk", "psych folk", "new weird america", there's a 90% chance it'll be awful; there's a 5% chance it'll be listenable but garbage, and there's a 5% chance it'll be genius -- but the really genius bands never get written about

- If there are 500 posts about a certain band on the sonic youth gossip that aren't sonic youth, they'll probably be disappointing, with FEW exceptions

- Pretty much anything released on 31g records or Gold Standard Labs ... (there are a few exceptions like the Phantom Limbs, but they're VERY far and few in between) pretty much anything Justin Pearson has any involvement in whatsoever...

- Any band that has ever or will ever be on the cover of Spin, Blender, Alternative Press (except the first 50 issues or so -- they had Girls Against Boys and Dead Kennedys on their early covers! What the fuck happened to them?), Rolling Stone, and probably NME.

- You know how Rolling Stone has those "500 Best Albums of all Time" lists? 450 of those will be AWFUL.

- If they wear girl pants.

- If you read a review of a band and it mentions "Wolf Eyes" and "Merzbow" in the same review, stay the fuck away!

- If you read a review and the reviews says a band is "ressurrecting" a certain type of sound or genre.

- 90% of bands that start with "The". NOT ALL.. but most. THE Cure. THE Smiths. THE Vines. THE Hives. THE Strokes. Note that THE Jesus Lizard doesn't count since they are often simply referred to as "Jesus Lizard". Note THE Boredoms definitely don't count even though I've seen that listed many times.

- 99.99999999999% of bands.

Hmm, or else just follow what your heart tells you and make up YOUR OWN mind.
