I just think most bands get worse near the end of their career, they lose the energy of their early albums period.

that is very true
bands may be together for years before that first album comes out and it contains years worth of inspirationa nd frustration and ideas and musical bits. the second album, for most bands, is written fresh from scratch, which is a bad idea, and which leaves you writing songs about how "hard it is" on tour and bullshit like that. after a while, when you are succesful, you try too hard, becaue how can you write angry rock songs or sad rock songs when you are confortable, living and eating well, and enjoying life for maybe the very first time? that is why popstars last longer than rock ussually. they can just keep peddling the same glossy feel-good bullshit with the same hooks all the time.

That's an awesome quote. There are so many first albums that kick total ass.

I like two of the Sex Pistols' post-Johnny Rotten singles - No One is Innocent, and The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle.

Melly true facts: I was in a guitar orchestra thingy with 1994, before anyone knew who he was - he looked "normal" too - no make up, dyed hair etc. I had a HUGE crush on him. Then when he came out with Placebo, I saw his pic, went "nooooo!", and my unrequited love for him died. Bastard.

Heckler Spray - yes, really. It was that (amongst other incidents) that made me slowly realise that I was gay after all. You know the feeling you have when you're knocked over by the beauty of a woman, to the point that you feel a bit shy just looking at them? Well, I had the gay version of that...I didn't tell a soul a the time, either - nothing to do with Molko, by the way, more to do with my very mixed-up feelings and emotions back then.

Funny you mention the Gilmour solo CD - I've heard bits of it sober, and felt that it was "tasteful, but a bit boring". Perhaps if I was more fucked up, I'd "get" it a lot more?

It's OK. Very polished (as you'd nodoubt expect). Easy to dismiss out of hand as mere wallpaper music for Q readers - which it is, basically.
