Sonic Youth est un groupe de rock indépendant fondé à New York en 1981. Son style est généralement relié au mouvement punk. Sonic Youth a été associé à différents courants musicaux depuis le début des années 1980 : d'abord no wave (1981-1983), puis hard-core (1983-1986), grunge (1989-1992), post-rock (1998-2001).
Cette difficile classification est due en partie à un style propre, nourri de très nombreuses influences et créant son propre caractère. La musique de Sonic Youth peut être considérée comme une tentative de destructuration de la pop music par l'emploi récurrent de dissonances et de distorsions dans des chansons fondées sur des mélodies pop. Sonic Youth est considéré comme le groupe majeur du genre noisy pop : bruitiste mais pas bruyant. Au commencement inspirés par les expérimentations de Rhys Chatham et de Glenn Branca (avec qui la majeure partie de la bande a joué), ils ont été connus pour l'usage d'une variété de tunings peu orthodoxes de guitare, et pour l'usage des guitares préparées et des tournevis ajoutés pour modifier le timbre.
Les membres de Sonic Youth sont par ailleurs chacun impliqués dans différents projets artistiques annexes (musique, films, ...) et ont parrainé de nombreux groupes indépendants (par exemple Blonde Redhead, mais le plus célèbre étant Nirvana, au début des années 1990).
Ils ont créé leur propre label indépendant Sonic Youth Recordings, ou SYR, afin de sortir des disques expérimentaux qui ne pourraient pas paraître sur Geffen leur label habituel.
