THE HAMMER OF THE GODS (2009) - TERRIBLE! like a glorified tv episode but worse than tv. still, for a weekend morning, strangely satisfying-- like watching cartoons. it's definitely a talk-back movie. MAPS TO THE STARS (CRONENBERG 2014) - fantastic as usual. i mean if you love cronenberg. i know this movie didn't get as high reviews from critics and public but what do i care? i'm ready to watch it again. hollywood! he said that all of his movies this one is closest to a documentary--ha ha ha ha. very good. LA LEY DEL DESEO (ALMODOVAR, 1987) - in english THE LAW OF DESIRE. i've seen this before but it's difficult to get tired of almodovar's coked-up soap operas of this period. i love to see how his themes return throughout his career--- here you'll find several (no spoilers though). good acting too-- who doesn't love carmen maura? banderas as a young psycho a plus, ha ha ha. |

I dunno. Probably. I went to pornhub. I'll let you browse and answer that for yourself. There was an interview with the actress at the beginning or end talking about how great the experience was, and the video I watched was called "Brutal Fuck." So we all know what's going on and it's all consensual. But I'm left with "I dunno." I glanced at other titles and "rape" and "force" came up a lot. Personally, I can't help but associate these staged rapes with rapes that occur in the real world and holy hell it's a dark viewing experience, at least for me. |

Some time has passed now and I think I've fully processed my viewing experience. So here it goes:
Avengers: Age Of Ultron I was somewhat entertained while it lasted but even during my viewing process I felt waves of disappointment heading towards me. Ultron had tons of potencial as a villain, but in my opinion it wasn't fully realized. It didn't feel like he was that much of a threat. Then there were some pacing issues. Vision's first appearance, while beautifully shot, was extremely rushed and kind of seemed out of place. And then there were plot points that got entirely abandoned later in the movie. I don't want to spoil anything for potencial US-viewers (who still have to wait until Friday), so I'll keep it vague. There are characters in the movie that have a personal vendetta against Tony Stark. It would have been interesting if this plot point were explored further, but it somehow got shoved off a cliff towards the end of the movie. Overall it felt like there were so many concepts that never got past the Alpha or Beta-Phase. There were a few standalone scenes though that were a thing of beauty. Two of them involving Vision. And the chemistry between the characters is still there. If I were to rate it, I'd give it a 6/10 right now. |

So it wasn't better than the first Avengers? I only saw the first trailer that was released and haven't watched any of the other trailers or any scenes that have been released online. I've had high hopes for this even suggesting this could be the Marvel films' "The Empire Strikes Back". I've skimmed over a couple reviews saying it was disappointing but for the most part it seems to be getting great early reviews.

I was hoping for the same thing. In terms of tone it kind of is similar to 'The Empire Strikes Back', but unfortunately it didn't have the consistency to reach the emotional gravitas it could have reached. There are several darker implications that seem intriguing at first, but then wind up going nowhere. The pacing didn't exactly help either. I'd say the first movie was much more well-rounded. There were a select few standout things Age Of Ultron did better though. Among them is the character development. We get to explore some new aspects about some of the characters that are nicely executed. The only problem is that these moments sort of got drowned out by a barrage of unfinished ideas. At least that's how I felt about it. Could be that you find it awesome. A lot of reviewers do. Guess it might turn out to be a very polarizing movie in the way it is perceived. |

Maps to the Stars was awesome, one of my favourites of last year, and maybe my favourite Cronenberg film. A while ago at work I had to watch a bunch of Almodovar's 80s films, en Espanol without subtitles. They all looked really fun but I couldn't really understand what, why or who. |

whoa, without subtitles it would be insane unless you speak the language really well. a lot of cultural references to its place & time, a lot of slang, a lot of subtext... the music is very carefully chosen for its lyrics too. for you it was probably like it would be for me to watch a mike leigh movie without subtitles (incomprehensible). almodovar is always entertaining though. even if i spanish is my first language, in every rewatch i find some new connection. i found the other day that an original almodovar song has been covered (repeatedly and with variations in multiple languages) by stereo total. there's a video of teh original. google "voy a ser mamá almodóvar" and "voy a ser mamá stereo total". it also comes in english in dad & mom versions. it's got superfunny lyrics and i didn't know it was his until just the other day. |
