The social network - 8.5/10
6.5/10 Would probably have been better if it wasn't so systematically elliptic. Adèle Haenel is great and the best actor of the film by far but that's no surprise.

RAIN THE COLOR OF BLUE WITH A LITTLE RED IN IT
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omzUAqfe8T0 It's a take off of Purple Rain set in Agadez, Niger in the Sahara desert. It's the first film made in the Tueareg language and stars the incredible Mdou Moctar in Prince's role. Mdou Moctar, e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYJGP0FBaT0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGDDO6mKzhg Mdou Moctar tours Europe and the US and if you get the chance to see him, then by god you should take it. |

Seen several weeks earlier:
Gone girl - 4/10 First time I don't enjoy a David Fincher film. Full of plot inconsistencies. The first 45 minutes are soporific, the acting is just OK and the ending pretty terrible.

I'd have given Gone Girl a 6/10 myself. Same as for the new Star Wars.

I think it's definitely his schlockiest film in a long while. Played out a bit like a David Lynch directed soap opera. But I'm one of the few people who didn't go nuts for the source material. It was "meh" as far as I'm concerned. I just thought the film was enjoyable to watch. You're right, the performances were tepid (the female cop was probably the highlight of the movie, forget her name), and the story was only good while the suspense lasted. The soundtrack added to that a lot. I do like a David Fincher movie. But compared to Fight Club, which suited his style perfectly, or Benjamin Button, which was - oddly - one of the more emotionally poignant big budget films of the 00's, Gone Girl was just so-so. Still fun to watch things unravel, though. He definitely took a page from the Blue Velvet book of melodrama for this one, and I don't think enough people picked up on that. But whatever. Critically it was a flop compared to his last several films, most of which received butt-loads of Oscar nominations and became pop culture events. |

The Revenant: Gritty, visceral and beautifully shot. Lubezki and Sakamato's work really shine in this one. The film does get a bit too pregnant with meaning every now and then though. I thought the whole Jesus-y vibe was a bit off-putting, but that might just be a petty personal gripe. The performances were great though and some of the quieter moments are really gripping. I'd say check it out.

Tom Hardy was amazing in it. And yes, I loved the music. Was the last to leave the theater because I could not pull myself away from the closing credits music. Some really cool cello work in this I thought. |

Couple of docu dramas lately
Spotlight and The Big Short. Both were very good and recco'd. I had reservations about the Big Short due to not much caring for Steve Carell, but he was actually pretty good in it and overall, it was a good movie. Spotlight was EXCELLENT |

The documentary "Call Me Lucky" about a never really successful stand up comic named Barry Crimmins, who I'd never heard of before, but was doing stand up in the 80's in the vein of Bill Hicks. But the documentary is more than just about his career, as it goes into a traumatic incident in his childhood as a sexual abuse victim, and how that's affected the rest of his life. The film is at times very funny, as he is very funny, but delves into some dark stuff, and certainly not everyone wants to imagine. That said, the movie is very good.

went to see Coen Bros latest, Hail Ceasar!, pretty good, has just about everything from cheesy 50's Hollywood, choreography, singing cowboys with rope tricks, crazy directors, H bombs, and Communists.

It blew my mind. Not very compelling, but my 3-year-old nephew absolutely loves it. |
