well mostly yes
vh1 did the hip hop honors last week honoring among others, Rakim, Beastie Boys, MC Lyte, Ice Cube, Afrika Bammbattaa, and the Wu-Tang Clan so for rap music, MTV shows the worst and the best, but doesn't give a shit about rock anymore |

MTV makes me feel so old...when I see these crappy bands' videos and their overly emoted yet perfectly intelligible vocals, I just wanna smoke crack.

Fuck yeah! Only nobody really wears baseball jackets or whatever anymore.
Seriously, though, pop music is reaching new lows. The dominating sexual themes of most of today's 'hits' are just getting worse. There used to be sneaky little metaphors and whatnot, but now it's just full out sonic porno. 'Promiscuous Girl'. I mean, what the fuck is that? I can bet you theres little kids singing along to it. This reminds me of that routine Chris Rock did on music like that, where he was rapping; "Slap her with a dick, slap her with a dick, fuck her in the eye, fuck her in the eye, blind the bitch, blind the bitch!" |

I find it's healthiest to ignore its existance. There's no sense in thinking about it. It isn't worthwhile. It isn't music or art of any kind. It doesn't have any relevance. The problem for me is when I have to argue this with people.

Whats all the whining about? MTV doesn't even play videos anymore(joking)
MTV, the one place where you would want to sit and watch some videos and get away from all the reality-daytime-drama shows in existence and oh, whats this, nothing but reality-daytime-drama shite. I remember mtv back in the old days when the only things on were videos and the game show ''remote control''. Also, lets say they did play videos, everyone here has already testified to the auditory malfunction most of the bands incur towards the viewer, not to mention the fact that a decently directed and creative video is apparently something of long ago. I gave up on this network of discontent many a year ago and find that the majority of people who like good music have done the same, which brings us to this thread, a bunch of faux and not so faux musical afficionado's casting MTV into a firey hell. I love it |

You feel old??? How do you think I feel? I remember when MTV was a pay channel, just like HBO, Showtime, etc. My dad had a friend in the Air Force who was all about buying tons of electronics during frequent trips to Japan. And this was during a time when the Zeniths and Magnavoxes of the world still held market share leads over Sony and Mitsubishi. Anything electronic and Japanese, this guy would buy it and bring it back. He built some ungodly 16-speaker DIY "surround-sound" home entertainment center, and I used to love it when my folks would visit his house because he would always put on MTV for me and blast it through the system. When I was nine, it seemed like everything on MTV was good. And surely it wasn't (or it hasn't aged well (e.g., Buggles, Taco (especially Taco!)), but back then, so few bands were making videos that all you had to do was submit one, and it would likely get played. Unless you were black, unfortunately.

MTV executives got together and ecided arouns 1989 that they would NOT rgow old with their audience, and instead, market the network strictly to 10-14 year old kids, kids who are just starting to get into music and can therefore be misled easily and coerced into buying what the MTV execs want you to buy.
I miss the old VJ's. Just having 6 people on all day, people who actually were knowledgable aout music history and the new music and influences and all that stuff. it was GLORIOUS for a 8 yr old (1981). I loved it all.

I loved MTV circa 1981-82. Even though I didn't like most of the music videos or the artists, it was mindless fun to sit around at night and watch video after video and laugh at the dumb-ass VJs and how awkward it all was. Kept me entertained. Then it got too slick. Quickly. Like by 1984, it was starting to go horribly wrong.

I forgot it even existed. I gotta admit watching it when I younger though, I had cable in my room at four, it was probably watching all those music videos that corrupted me.
