oh dear.
this morning, my mother came home from a rehearsal. she had her violin in its case on her back. the strap got stuck behind a bike in the hallway, making the case slip off her shoulder and fall on the floor. result: two cracks in the violin, one in the front and one in the back. the specialist said he might be able to fix it, but it will never sound the same and the value will get a lot lower. i'm scared, this is worse than when she broke a finger! |

This is a crisis of epic proportions, biblical, even.

At the same time, it's not as bad as if your mom cracked her own front and back, and then the specialist told her she would never be the same again and lose her value.
Perspective, dear child. Perspective.

fucking A man. viols of all sizes suffer a lot when they are cracked. I hope they can repair the damages. It may takle a real master, and a lot fo money, to get it close to before, but it may never ever get back to performance quality.
that shit sucks.

I take it, of course, that everybody told her to please be more careful next time?

Mmmm, yes - violins are quite delicate objects.
I'm suspicious about this violin case. Was it just a canvas bag, or a proper hard case? One solution might be a rubber violin but I'd imagine the loss of tone would render such an instrument wholly useless. Hope there's a happy ending to this.... |

I live with someone whose violin is worth more than your car (unless you have a company car or are exceptionally rich). If you accidentally broke your car to the point of not being able to use it, you'd be pissed off, right? Perspective dear. All problems are minor except to the indivual, for whom we should have sympathy. Mine being extended herewith.
