yeah, & i just saw a clip & Steve is in it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436231/ (i suppose this could go in go in the "Sonic Gossip" section as a result haha) now i don't feel so bad about all the posts i made today because i would have been impelled to post about this appearance of Steve Shelley in the new Daniel Johnston documentary The Devil & Daniel Johnston anyway. (a play on the Devil & Daniel Webster & i imagine, his parents as ignorant but affable Texans & Robert Johnson as well) Everyneurotic wrote: early daniel johnston is genius!!! the latter stuff is good, but the earlier the better my early stuff was my best too.. now that I can play, it's nothing all that special...but i suppose if i ever found a like-minded person to play drums though i could put my stuff out there still because it rocks on some level...it's the age-old problem, everyone wants to play guitar. When i have played with a drummer in the past, (just jamming though) some sort of strange magic takes over & I play stuff that pours right out of me. Add to my difficulties that I am not a good singer really, but as we all know that doesn't really matter if you can write good songs. I cannot. I have severe mental handicaps when it comes to writing any kind of song lyrics. So that means that in addition to finding some needle-in-a-haystack drummer, I would also have to find a dynamic frontperson. when Thurston was named guitarist of the year after Goo he joked that he could play "a killer version of Red House maybe by the time I'm fifty." Kim followed that up with this: "what's interesting is the way people compensate." |

danile johnston is a funny guy. I have met him several times. the first time was when I was at the Uniersity of houston and in the student program board (small and large stage) and we were setting up concerts. One of the concerts was daniel jjohnston. we wanted to get him to play. he came to play, and this is where I met him first, accompanied by his mother and two rather l;arge orderlies from the texas mental health institute where he was a patient at the time.
he played great songs, just himself surrounded by many instruments, so the songs were exactly like the tapes. he played my favorite CASPER the FRIENDLY GHOST he was very entertaining and odd and weird. after the show I escorted him and his "crew (the orderlies and his mom) outside of the building at U of H, and said good bye to him. later that week we heard word that he had ditched his escorts just minutes after I said goodbye and had ended up in Miami somehow,a nd that his parents had to go get him. the next time I met him (BUY YIP JUMP MUSIC by the way) he played a gig at rudyards in houston and he had by then been on medication and was much better spirits. he had also been playing witha full band, which was cool, but this gig was just him again. the openeer was a band that was originally from houston then austin then NYC called Drums & Tuba. I like drums & Tuba. daniel johnston was great that night. he is a very nice guy. the dead milkmen's cover of ROCKETSHIP{ is my favorite cover of daniel johnston

Wowzers!
I saw the movie last weekend (it's also playing in Chicago) and absolutely loved it. I'm a documentary nut, and this has to be one of the best. His life is so interesting and wild... the kind of story that couldn't be scripted. Steve's inclusion in it (and Thurston and Lee are in a videotape) really made it special, but the best part was the Gibby Haynes interview (I don't want to spoil it). GO SEE THIS MOVIE! IT'S THE COWS' BOLLACKS! |

Jeff Feuerzeig is cool. His Half Japanese doc is top notch (The Band That Would Be King). I'll have to check out the Daniel Johnston one.
