Im so fucking sick of those ads and stupid commercials of "the buzz" with a bunch of bands with a slight alternative feel and willing to do anything for a hit being thrown together on a disc as the definitive stuff of the 90s.
A lot of great music happened in the 90s and it needs to be recognized. Now Unfortunately no major label would be willing to or indie rock label be able to compile the best tracks from 90s independent music. I still think it would be interesting to try and do this on the board here. Kind of like a starter kit to 90s indie rock.I'd still include bands that grew up on indie music but were on a major label in the 90s and still toured with underground bands. (excluding nirvana). So indie influenced music that wasnt a huge seller.(you may argue but id include sonic youth, they're important to 90s indie rock as much as any other band) Figure a band can have two songs on the comp at most: Pavement- Summer Babe,Cut Your Hair Sebadoh- Just Gimme Indie Rock, Liense To Confuse Built To Spill- Big Dipper, I Would Hurt a Fly Jesus Lizard- Boilermaker, Then Comes Dudley Slint- Breadrumb Trail, Don Aman Bikini Kill- Rebel girl, Alien She Sleater Kinney- I wanna Be Your Joey Ramone, Dig Me Out Neutral Milk Hotel- Holland 1949, oh Comely My Bloody Valentine- Soon, Only Shallow Sonic Youth- Dirty Boots, Washing Machine Mercury Rev- Chasing a Bee, Something For Joey Fugazi- Repeater, By You Halo Benders- Dont Touch My Bikini, Virginia Reels Around The Fountain Swirlies - Pancake, Park The Car by the Side of the road Superchunk- Slack Motherfucker, Tossing Seeds Eugenius- Bed In, Flame On Polvo- Fractured,Thermal Treasure Liz Phair- Fuck and Run, Cinco De Mayo Cat Power- American Flag, What Would The Community Think Shellac- The guy who invented fire, My Black Ass I know this isnt a complete overall of 90s indie rock which is why i thought It'd be cool to have other board members create their own lists and hopefully fill in gaps at the same time.I kind of want it to be a spectrum of all kind of 90s indie music. I know there was a whole "love rock" kind of thing going on in the first half and although i know some bands (magnetci Fields) i dont know of them that well. Also alt country with wilco or bands like don cab, yo la tengo, guided by voices and tortoise who i dont know but know they should be included.

Eh, close enough. I don't know nearly enough bands, though. I haven't listened to probably a third of those.

I woulda picked "Good Morning, Captain" for the Slint track, but I believe that album was recorded in 1987 if memory serves.
Edit: Never mind. It was 1991. The band formed in 1987. Whoops. |
